Dean Heller
Dean Heller (* 10. May 1960 in Castro Valley , California ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2007 to 2011 he represented the second constituency of Nevada in the US House of Representatives ; from May 3, 2011 he was a member of the US Senate for that state . After his election defeat in 2018, he resigned from Congress in January 2019.
Career
Dean Heller grew up in Nevada, attended Carson High School in Carson City and then until 1985 the University of Southern California in Los Angeles . Before starting his political career, he worked on the stock exchange and in stock trading. Between 1990 and 1994 he was a member of the Nevada Assembly . From 1995 to 2007 he served as Secretary of State in the Nevada government.
In 2006 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Nevada's second congressional constituency. In this election, he prevailed with a five percentage point advantage over Jill Derby from the Democratic Party . In 2008 he was confirmed in his mandate with an even clearer lead - again against Jill Derby -, also in November 2010 against the Democrat Nancy Price. Heller was a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means . He was named as a possible candidate in the 2010 gubernatorial election or for the United States Senate . But Heller stated that he did not want to compete against the Democratic incumbent Harry Reid , who then met Sharron Angle and defeated them.
When the then US Senator for Nevada, John Ensign , announced in April 2011 that he would be stepping down on May 3, 2011, Heller was considered the first candidate for the office in the media and was actually promoted to Senator by Governor Brian Sandoval in May Successor appointed to Ensign. Heller narrowly won the regular Senate election in November 2012 against Democratic Congressman Shelley Berkley .
Heller came to public attention during Donald Trump's presidency in June 2017 because - as a senator of a state won by the Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 and therefore in danger for the Republicans in the 2018 election - he might have a decisive voice put the Senate vote against the health reform drawn up by his party, which would largely replace Obamacare and, according to calculations by the Congressional Budget Office, health insurance would cost 22 million people. Heller was supported by Governor Sandoval, who saw the health insurance of 210,000 residents of Nevada at risk, but was threatened within the party by possible primary opponents and the President's Super PAC itself, which threatened a television advertising campaign against Heller. After Heller had distanced himself for a long time from President Trump, he sought proximity in the election campaign for his Senate seat in 2018, in which he was considered the most vulnerable Republican mandate holder against the Democrat Jacky Rosen . On election day he was defeated by Rosen with 45.4 to 50.4 percent of the vote. His mandate ended on January 3, 2019.
Dean Heller is a Mormon and married to Lynne Heller, with whom he has four children.
