Howard Walter Cannon (born January 26, 1912 in St. George , Utah , † March 5, 2002 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American Democratic Party politician and member of the United States Senate from 1959 to 1983 as a representative of Nevada .

biography

Cannon attended Arizona Teachers College and then went to the University of Arizona to study law. He then worked as a lawyer in Arizona , Nevada and Utah. In 1939 he took on his first political mandate as a state senator in Utah; the following year he became district attorney in Washington County . During World War II he served in the US Army .

In 1949 he was elected trial attorney in Las Vegas, which he succeeded three more times before he entered the US Senate in 1958. Cannon voted there in 1964 for the Civil Rights Act and was also generally assigned to the more moderate wing of the Democratic Party. In the elections of 1964, 1970 and 1976 he was re-elected to the Senate; it was not until 1982 that he was defeated by the Republican Chic Hecht .

Since Cannon was also chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee , which dealt with the deregulation of the transport industry, officials from the Teamsters ' transport workers' union planned to bribe him. The bully Joseph Lombardo was charged with this attempt but acquitted. However, the attempt at bribery cost Roy Williams the presidency of the union and, although Cannon made no attempt, could have contributed to his 1982 election defeat. Cannon then withdrew from politics.
