Charles Belknap Henderson (* 8. June 1873 in San Jose , California , †  8. November 1954 in San Francisco , California) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the state of Nevada in the US Senate represented.

Early years

Charles Henderson was a young boy when he and his parents moved to Nevada in 1876, where he attended public schools in Elko . He then studied at the University of the Pacific in Stockton and Stanford University . He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1895 ; the following year he was admitted to the bar and began practicing in Elko. In 1898 he fought in the Spanish-American War and was a member of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment known as the Rough Riders .

In 1901, Henderson took over the office of District Attorney in Elko County and held this until 1905 when he was given a seat in the Nevada Assembly . He exercised this until 1907. He then served on the governing body of the University of Nevada at Reno until 1917 .

On January 12, 1918, Charles Henderson was named a US Senator by Nevada's Governor Emmet D. Boyle . He succeeded the late Francis G. Newlands in Washington, DC and also won the by-election for this seat. In 1920 he ran for re-election, but was defeated by the former Republican governor Tasker Oddie and had to leave on March 3, 1921 Resign from the Senate.

From 1934 Henderson served on the board of directors of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation , an independent federal agency . In 1941 he took over their chairmanship; six years later, he resigned this office and retired from politics. He became President of Elko Telephone & Telegraph Co. and Director of the Western Pacific Railroad .

Charles Henderson died in San Francisco in 1954. The city of Henderson in Nevada bears his name as a tribute.
