Elko County is a county in the state of Nevada in the United States . The county seat is Elko .

history

In 1868 the Central Pacific Railroad moved its tracks through this area and the towns of Elko, Carlin and Wells were created. Elko County, the fourth largest county in the United States, was formed on March 5, 1869 from parts of Lander County. The origin of the name is not clear, an explanation derives it from an Indian word that is supposed to mean "white woman" or "beautiful". Another explanation claims that the railroad owner Charles Crocker have to roving in the area elk (English Elk ) railway station by attaching an O called s Elko.

Six buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 14, 2018).

Most of the county is in the Great Basin , while parts of the northern border drain into the Snake River Basin . It is located at heights of 1,300 meters on the edge of the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake to 3,400 meters in the Ruby Mountains . The Humboldt River has its source in Elko County and is the main source of water in northern Nevada.

economy

One of the largest gold mining areas in the world, the so-called Carlin Trend, is located in the county area near the small town of Carlin on Interstate 80 . The company Newmont Mining discovered 1,962 gold in the area and opened as operator in 1965. her first gold mine under the name Carlin Gold Mining Company . The Carlin Trend is the most significant gold discovery in North America in the 20th century.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 45,291 people. There were 15,638 households and 11,493 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.04% White, 0.59% African American, 5.30% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, and 8.50% other races Groups; 2.78% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 19.73% percent of the population.

Of the 15,638 households, 43.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.30% were married couples living together, 8.40% were single mothers. 26.50% were not families. 20.90% were single households and 4.80% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.33 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 32.50% residents under 18 years of age, 8.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 5.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 108.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 109.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,383 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,206. Males had a median income of $ 41,322 versus $ 24,653 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,482. 8.90% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 9.50% of them were under 18 years of age and 7.60% were 65 years of age or older.

There are four parishes in Elko County, all of which have city status. For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains seven census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, these are unincorporated areas.
