Nye County is a county in the US state of Nevada . The county seat is Tonopah .

The county covers an area of 47,031 square kilometers. It is the largest county in Nevada in terms of area and the third largest in the heartland of the United States . It has a larger area than Denmark .
history
Nye County was founded in 1864 and is named after James W. Nye , Governor of Nevada. The administrative headquarters were initially in Ione City when the county was founded in 1864 . In 1867, today's ghost town of Belmont became the administrative center. It has been Tonopah since 1905 .

The county had a population of 32,485 people as of the 2000 census . There were 13,309 households and 9,063 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.63% White, 1.18% African American, 1.96% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.32% Pacific Islander, and 2.98% other races Groups; 3.15% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 8.35% percent of the population.
Of the 13,309 households, 26.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.30% were married couples living together, 7.40% were single mothers. 31.90% were not families. 25.70% are single households and 10.30% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.9.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.70% residents under the age of 18, 5.40% between the ages of 18 and 24, 24.00% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 28.50% between the ages of 45 and 64 18.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 105.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 104.70 males.
The median income for a household in the 36,024 USD , and the median income for a family was 41,642 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,276 versus $ 22,394 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,962. 10.70% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. 13.10% of them were under 18 years of age and 8.30% were 65 years of age or older.
