Nye County is a county in the US state of Nevada . The county seat is Tonopah .

The county covers an area of ​​47,031 square kilometers. It is the largest county in Nevada in terms of area and the third largest in the heartland of the United States . It has a larger area than Denmark .

history

Nye County was founded in 1864 and is named after James W. Nye , Governor of Nevada. The administrative headquarters were initially in Ione City when the county was founded in 1864 . In 1867, today's ghost town of Belmont became the administrative center. It has been Tonopah since 1905 .

The county had a population of 32,485 people as of the 2000 census . There were 13,309 households and 9,063 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.63% White, 1.18% African American, 1.96% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.32% Pacific Islander, and 2.98% other races Groups; 3.15% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 8.35% percent of the population.
