Churchill County is a county in the southwest of the state of Nevada in the United States . The county seat is Fallon .
A special feature of the county is that, through Churchill County Communications , it is the only county in the United States to own and operate the local provider of telecommunications services.
history
Churchill County was founded in 1861 and named after Fort Churchill (which is now in Lyon County ). The fort, in turn, was named after Brigadier General Sylvester Churchill from the Mexican-American War . Until 1864 Bucklands was in what is now Lyon County administrative seat, later there were La Plata (1864-1868) and Stillwater (1868-1904) until 1904 Fallon was the administrative seat. In the 19th century there were attempts to dissolve Churchill County because of its small size, but this was prevented by MP Lemuel Allen through an objection to the governor after both houses had already approved the dissolution in 1875.
20 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 13, 2018).
