history

Nevada State Capitol

The first Europeans in the area were part of an expedition led by John C. Frémont in January 1843. Fremont named the river that flowed through the valley after his scout and mountain man Christopher "Kit" Carson . The valley and the surrounding area were then inhabited by the Washoe . The trading post on the Carson River was initially called Eagle Station , and in 1858 the small settlement that had now emerged was renamed Carson City to reflect the river.

The following year, the discovery of gold and silver in nearby Comstock Lode (under what is now Virginia City ) sparked growth. Due to the rapid population growth, Nevada was separated from the Utah Territory in 1861 . Carson City prevailed over Virginia City and American Flat as the capital, and remained so when the Nevada Territory was converted to a state in 1864. This reduced the dependence on mining and trading activities played an increasing role. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was built between Virginia City and Carson City, and the current Capitol Building from 1870–71 .

With the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad over Donner Pass , which is too far north for Carson City to benefit, the transport volume and the population of Carson City decreased again. The city experienced a small boom through the mining activities in Tonopah and Goldfield . Throughout the 20th century the place grew slightly, so that in 1960 it reached the population level of 1880 again.

One engineering structure in Carson City has National Historic Landmark status , the Virginia and Truckee Railway Motor Car 22 . A total of 42 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 13, 2018).
