Aggro Berlin was a German independent label from Berlin . It was founded in 2001 as a record company for hip-hop artists. From 2001 to 2007, Aggro Berlin used the Cologne-based company Groove Attack to sell its products . Then the distribution channels of the major label Universal Music Germany were used. In April 2009, Aggro Berlin ended active label work and prematurely terminated the contracts with its rap artists. Since then, the company has concentrated on the Internet platform Aggro.TV, on which new videos by hip-hop musicians are regularly published.

In the period from the foundation in 2001 to the termination of the artist contracts in 2009, the rappers Sido , B-Tight , Bushido , Fler , Tony D , G-Hot and Kitty Kat were under contract with Aggro Berlin, whereby the duration of the business cooperation varied. Stylistically, the label's hip-hop musicians were particularly noticeable for their aggressive lyrics. The artists served various sub-genres of hip-hop music , from gangsta and battle rap to crunk . Just a few years after it was founded, Aggro Berlin was one of the most commercially successful independent labels in Germany.

history

2001-2003

Aggro Berlin was founded in 2001 by Specter , Spaiche and Halil as an independent label . Specter had previously worked as a graffiti artist as a member of the Squat Force and as a graphic designer. His work for Aggro Berlin included the conception of products such as the creation of logos, artwork and videos as well as the development of marketing strategies. Halil was part of the GHS group and owner of the Berlin store Downstairs, which specializes in hip-hop items . Spaiche was also active in the Berlin hip-hop scene. He worked as a breakdancer in the Funky Grossangriff group, with which he was also able to win battles. In 1994 he won the “Battle of the Year” with the Vlinke Vüsse group. Spaiche also worked as an organizer of various hip-hop events. At the end of the 1990s, Spaiche had also directed the youth project Hip-Hop-Mobil , through which he was able to come into contact with numerous people from the Berlin hip-hop scene.

The approach when it was founded was to create a platform for authentic rap music that would stand out from the popular hip-hop of the 1990s. In an interview with hip-hop magazine Juice, Specter commented on the company's objectives: “ Over the years, distributors and the media have built a solid picture of hip-hop. The music was passed on to the masses from above. What we are trying to do right now is to join the elite from the very bottom. "The first rapper who signed an artist contract with the label, were Sido and B-Tight , members of the hip-hop group The sect, as well as from Berlin-Schöneberg originating Bushido . The rappers Vokalmatador and Rhymin Simon , who also belonged to The Sect at the time , turned down a contract offer. The 360 ° model was used in the contracts, so that all matters relating to the music business, including the organization of recording studios and concerts, the marketing of the artists and the creation of logos and artwork, were contractually the responsibility of the label. Further agreements were later made on the organization of private concerns of the artists such as the establishment of bank accounts, health insurance or tax numbers with the tax office.

The first publication by Aggro Berlin was in 2001 the Splash-Spezial EP for the music festival Splash! by Sido and B-Tight, who initially appeared as a duo under the name Royal TS and later, on the advice of the label management, renamed everything is the sect . In the early days of the label it was not possible for the founders of Aggro Berlin to find a distributor for the sound carriers produced. After the independent music distributor Groove Attack had also refused a collaboration, Aggro Berlin used an existing mixtape sales account Groove Attacks to sell its audio cassettes and CDs . Groove Attack became aware of Aggro Berlin through the subsequent increase in sales and set up its own account for the record company. The label's internet sales were taken over by Halil's Downstairs store .

The album Alles ist die Sekt was released in early 2002 : Album No. 3 . Furthermore, in 2002 the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 1 was published as an EP. On this, Bushido, Sido and B-Tight appear in different constellations. In addition, the rapper Fler contributes his first contribution to a publication of the label under the name Frank White. The song Arschficksong , which was later re-released several times, can already be found on Aggro Announcement No. 1 . The “aggro announcements” were used regularly for several years to present the artists and were part of the marketing of the label. In August 2002 Die Sekt performed on the side stage of the Splash! on. In addition, the album Carlo Cokxxx Nutten , which was recorded by Bushido and Fler under the pseudonyms Sonny Black and Frank White, the EP Der Neger (in mir) by B-Tight and the second label sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 2 were released in 2002 .

In July 2003, Aggro Berlin released Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline , the debut album Bushidos. It rose to number 88 in the German charts, making it the first record of the label to occupy a position in the album charts. In the course of the publication, the songs Bei Nacht and Gemein like 10 were decoupled as singles. From the curb to the skyline was discussed in various media and thus increased the level of awareness of Bushidos and Aggro Berlin. At the time of publication, the album received positive reviews from critics in music journalism. Since the album can be stylistically assigned to the sub-genre gangsta rap , it is characterized by strikingly aggressive lyrics, which led to controversy in the following years.

Both Bushido and Sido and B-Tight performed at the Splash! on. The afternoon performances on the main stage of the festival were attended by 20,000 spectators. In October 2003, the artist roster Aggro Berlin was expanded with the signing of a contract by the rapper Fler. This had already played a large part in the creation of From the Curb to the Skyline . On the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 3 , published in December , Fler appears on an equal footing with Bushido, B-Tight and Sido. The sampler was sold around 60,000 times, making it Aggro Berlin's first commercially successful sound carrier. A video was shot for the song Christmas song by Sido on Aggro Announcement No. 3 . This was the first video clip produced by Aggro Berlin to be broadcast regularly on television. In particular, in the program Get the Clip of the music television channel VIVA Plus , Christmas song received a high rotation due to the calls from viewers . In the Christmas song video, Sido appears exclusively with a metal skull mask, which was designed by Specter and which the rapper has wore at all public appearances since 2003.

At the end of 2003 the label founders Aggro Berlins held talks for the first time with the major label Universal Music Group about a possible cooperation. With Tim Renner's exit from the management team, Specter, Spaiche and Halil decided against working together. Neffi Temur, A&R of Universal Music, then contacted Bushido to poach him. Then Bushido switched to Universal Music in 2004. He broke off contact with Fler and spoke out against Aggro Berlin and its board both publicly and in the lyrics of his subsequent albums.

2004-2005

In early 2004, a video for the song Mein Block was published as a harbinger of Sido's first solo album . The remix version of the Berlin producer duo Beathoavenz was used for the video . In this version, the song had previously appeared on a CD for the hip-hop magazine Juice and on Aggro Announcement No. 3 . My block was also played on the music channels and released as a single. With number 13 in the German single charts, it was the first Aggro Berlin release to position itself in the top 20. In addition, with the single, a recording of the album entered the Austrian charts for the first time. My block thus initiated Sido's commercial breakthrough. In April 2004, Sido's debut album Maske followed , which entered the album charts at number 3 in Germany and thus developed into the Berlin label's most successful release to date. The album was also featured in the charts in Austria and Switzerland. Sido's success also increased its media presence.

In the first few months after Mask's release , 100,000 copies of the album were sold, making Sido's debut album gold . In addition, the rapper was awarded the Comet Music Prize in the Newcomer national category in September 2004 . On September 27, 2004, Sido was invited to the ProSieben show TV total for the first time . Sido released two more singles in 2004. Fuffies in the club , a decoupling from his album, and an ass fuck song , from Aggro Announcement No. 1 . The latter title, in particular, has become a recurring subject of public criticism. The high sales figures of 2004 were thematically taken up in the fourth part of the "Aggro Announcements" Aggro Announcement No. 4 published at the end of the year . The sampler was released on November 5, 2004 and also entered the top 10 of the album charts at number 7. Aggro Berlin produced a split video in which the songs Aggro Gold , Neue Deutsche Welle and Aggro Part 4 are presented. Like the previous clips by Sido, the video was played on music television, so that the rappers B-Tight and Fler also got presence on television.

In December 2004, Aggro Announcement No. 3 was the first time a sound carrier from Aggro Berlin was indexed by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People , which prohibited sales to minors and advertising for the sampler. For the decision, the pieces were bang me! , Like 1 Gee and responsible for the sect . In its justification, the committee particularly emphasized the image of women conveyed in the song lyrics. This is " without exception negative and degrading ", which means that it is " diametrically opposed to the educational goal that is prevalent in society ". An application to index the single Arschficksong was not granted. A video for the song had previously appeared on the DVD Aggro Announcement DVD No. 1 and was released by the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry from the age of 16, so that no further classification of the BpjM could be made.

At the beginning of 2005 Sido appeared more frequently in the context of Stefan Raab's show TV total . In February 2005, the rapper took part in the first ever Bundesvision Song Contest for the federal state of Berlin with the song Mama is proud , in which he was able to achieve third place. Sido used the appearance to take off his mask in public for the first time. The Berliner was also invited to the Wok World Cup .

In 2005, Aggro Berlin published the first solo album by the rapper Fler under the title Neue Deutsche Welle . The pre-released single NDW 2005 generated controversy among the public. In particular, lines such as “ This is black-red-gold, hard and proud ” and the symbols in the video clip for the song, which the media saw as nationalistic, met with negative criticism. The advertising campaign for the album release, which carried the slogan “ From May 1st will be shot back ”, ensured that Fler was described as right-wing extremist in the media. In a piece later published free of charge called Identity , Fler distanced himself from the accusations of right-wing radicalism and justified his single NDW 2005 . Both the album Neue Deutsche Welle and the first single NDW 2005 occupied positions in the top 10 of the German charts.

In May 2005, the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 4 was able to achieve gold status through the sale of 100,000 records. Furthermore, in 2005 some of the label's publications came under criticism again, which was accompanied by indexing. Since May 31, 2005, the sampler Aggro Announcement No. 2 has been allowed to use the songs Pussy and Psycho Neger B! can no longer be sold to minors. Sido's album Maske was also placed on List A of the indexed records. The decisive factor was the song Endlich weekend , which, from the point of view of the committee, glorified the consumption of drugs. A subsequent process by Aggro Berlin against the decision of the Federal Inspectorate was unsuccessful.

On August 8, 2005, Heisse Ware , a joint mixtape by B-Tight and Tony D, was released . On earlier publications such as Mask and Aggro Announcement No. 4 Tony D had already been heard as a member of The Sect with guest contributions. Heisse Ware is the first audio carrier from Aggro Berlin to contain various contributions by rappers from the Berlin Crime and Bassboxxx environment , including gynecologist , MC Bogy , Manny Marc and Smoky . At the end of September, two more indexes of the label's publications followed. Bushido's album Vom Bordstein bis zum Skyline and the successful sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 4 were banned from selling and advertising.

In autumn 2005 Sido formed the music project Your Favorite Rapper with rapper Harris , who became famous through the hip-hop duo Spezializtz . Together, the two musicians recorded the album Your Favorite Album , which made it to number 2 in the German album charts. The only single for the album is back at number 14 in the singles charts. By indexing mask , to Aggro Berlin decided to album entitled mask X reissue . Instead of the indexed track Endlich weekend it contains a remix of assfuck song . Fler's album Neue Deutsche Welle was also re-released on December 2, 2005 as a so-called Premium Edition . The song to be found on it According to own rules , which was created together with the Berlin G-Hot , was released as a single. The premium editions were of German New Wave an integral part of the marketing of products of the label Aggro Berlin. A large part of the albums published in the following years appeared simultaneously as a standard version and a premium edition .

At the end of 2005, following initial projects, rappers Tony D and G-Hot were signed as artists. Together with Sido, Fler and B-Tight they recorded the fifth sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 . The song Aggro Berlin Zeit was implemented as the first video by B-Tight, Tony D and G-Hot. In addition to the Aggro Berlin artists, the fifth part of the “Aggro Announcements” will again feature other hip-hop musicians from Berlin, including Bass Sultan Hengzt , Alpa Gun , Frauenarzt and MC Bogy. Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 entered the album charts at number 9 and reached gold status within three weeks.

2006-2008

At the beginning of 2006 the mixtape FLER 90210 by Fler and the single Wahlkampf by Sido and G-Hot from Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 were released . The sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 was indexed on May 31, 2006 as the sixth release of the independent label. After Mask X had already appeared, so-called X versions were released in mid-2006 for the samplers Aggro Announcement No. 2 , Aggro Announcement No. 3 , Aggro Announcement No. 4 and Aggro Announcement No. 5 , which instead of the title complained about, unpublished songs contain. In March 2006, Aggro Berlin began to create a monthly radio show called Aggroradio . The show was moderated by Harris, who appeared under the pseudonym of moderator BINICHNICH. Hip-hop musicians were guests on every show. In addition to regular visits by Aggro Berlin artists and people in their immediate vicinity, Olli Banjo , Franky Kubrick , Blumio , Das Bo , Grüne Medizin , Marcus Staiger , Snaga & Pillath , Azad , Automatikk , MC Basstard , Manuellsen and Prince Pi in the show.

In June 2006 Fler published his second solo album Trendsetter , which reached number 4 in Germany and was also able to position itself in Austria and Switzerland. Dad is back and Cüs boy with Muhabbet have been decoupled as singles. Further releases were Der neue Standard by the producer duo Beathoavenz, B-Tights EP X-Tasy and Aggrogant , a mixtape by G-Hot. The Christmas song known from the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 3 was also released as a single for the first time at the end of 2006. On September 5, 2006, the Aggro.TV platform was launched as a channel for the Internet video portal YouTube . Aggro.TV initially served to present new videos by the Aggro Berlin artists.

Sido's second solo album Ich followed in December 2006. This rose to number 4 in the German album charts and reached gold status after two days, which was a record at the time. On Ich you can hear guest contributions by Massiv , Peter Fox and Alpa Gun as well as by rapper Kitty Kat . Kitty Kat was the sixth member to receive an artist contract with Aggro Berlin. Kitty Kat's appearance was initially kept secret by the record company.

In January 2007, two more indexes followed by the BpjM. Flers FLER 90210 and Der neue Standard von Beathoavenz were also placed on List A of the indexed sound carriers. Fler's second mixtape Airmax Muzik was released as the first release in 2007. New York DJ Kayslay will host the mixtape . In March 2007, Aggro Berlin took care of the release of MC Bogy's album Willkommen in Abschaumcity . The Berliner was arrested at the end of 2006 as part of the video shoot for Sido's single Strassenjunge and has since been in custody in the Moabit correctional facility . When the album was marketed by Aggro Berlin, Bogy entered the album charts for the first time at number 92.

On April 27, 2007, B-Tight released a solo album on Aggro Berlin for the first time under the title Neger Neger . With Ich bin and Der Coolste two single releases for the album were released. The use of the word “negro” and the racist and sexist self-portrayal of B-Tights were criticized in the media. Above all, the Brothers Keepers association attacked B-Tight and Aggro Berlin and combined its criticism with a petition entitled "Breaking the Silence", which demanded the end of the marketing and sale of Negro Negroes .

There was a broad media response in the summer of 2007 to the publication of the free song Keine Toleranz by G-Hot and Boss A, which had been posted on the Internet without consulting the label management. In this, the two rappers call for violence against homosexuals. A rapper from Berlin then filed a complaint against the rappers. The employees and artists of Aggro Berlin distanced themselves from the content of the song in a press release and ended business relationships with G-Hot. The rapper himself later apologized and stated that the song was older and not intended for the public.

After MC Bogy's album, Aggro Berlin took on the release of other hip-hop musicians who do not have a label contract. In 2007, for example, the albums Everything or Nothing by the duo Jom & Said and Resurrected from ruins by Joe Rilla and the mixtape We take euros by DJ Sweap & Pfund 500 were released. B-Tight also released the mixtape Ghetto Romantik and Sido the album Eine Hand washes the other , on which a selection of his guest contributions can be heard on albums by other musicians. On September 14, 2007, Tony D's debut album Totalschaden was released . The album, which can be stylistically assigned to the hip-hop subgenre Crunk , entered the German album charts at number 21, which left Tony D behind the success of Sido, Fler and B-Tight.

In autumn 2007, Aggro Berlin signed a cooperation agreement with the major label Universal Music Group . With this, the marketing and sales fell into the area of responsibility of Universal Music . According to the business partners involved, the contract did not affect the creative independence. Due to the contract with Universal Music , no new releases from Aggro Berlin were distributed via Groove Attack. Groove Attack was still responsible for the distribution of previous albums by the label. The first release with Universal Music was the re-release of Sido's Christmas song as a single Christmas song 2007 just before Christmas .

The first album that was distributed through Universal Music was Fler's third solo album, Fremd im Vaterland , in January 2008 , the title of which, according to the rapper, should reflect his position in the hip-hop scene, which was marked by attacks. In various reports a reference to the song of the same name by the group Advanced Chemistry was made and in some cases criticized. As with Neue Deutsch Welle , Fler was again criticized for looking for buyers from the political right . Torch , a former member of Advanced Chemistry, saw the album's title as an affront to himself. Deutscha Bad Boy and Why are you like that? appeared as singles for the album. The previously heavily criticized album Neger Neger was indexed in April 2008. Aggro Berlin published the censored version Neger Neger X a few weeks after the indexing came into force.

On May 30th, 2008 Sido's third solo album Ich und Meine Maske followed , with which both the rapper and the Aggro Berlin label were able to post their first position at number 1 in the album charts. In Austria and Switzerland, the album entered position 2 each. With me and my mask , the Berliner achieved gold status in two countries. In Switzerland, Sido achieved a platinum record. Four tracks from the album were released as singles. In summer 2008, a collaboration project between Fler and Silla was published with Südberlin Masculin . As on previous projects, Fler appears within this project under the pseudonym Frank White. Other releases at the end of the year were B-Tights album Goldständer and Trilogy by Sido, a box with the albums Mask X , Me and Me and My Mask .

Three years after the last “Aggro Announcement”, Aggro Berlin decided to release another label sampler in December 2008. Since the sixth and seventh part of the series had been canceled in the previous two years, the sampler was released under the title Aggro Anti Ansage No. 8 . In the course of the publication, Kitty Kat was presented for the first time in press photos as well as in the video clips Hundert Metaz / 5 crass rappers / So is es und Move your ass .

At the beginning of 2009, the first rumors arose that Fler and Aggro Berlin wanted to end their cooperation early. A few days before the release of his last album on Aggro Berlin with the title Fler , Fler confirmed the separation from his label. In contrast to the previous albums, Aggro Berlin refrains from releasing different versions of Fler . The two tracks Check me out and I won't sing for you anymore were released as singles.

On April 1, 2009, Aggro Berlin announced the end of the label on its website. The record company separated from the remaining rappers and stopped building and marketing new artists. Aggro Berlin, however, remained as a company and retained the rights to the complete back catalog .

After the termination of the artist contracts announced as the label closure, the company concentrated on the video platform Aggro.TV. On this first all video clips of the label's artists and later all album releases of the record company appeared for listening. In April 2009 the first season of the series Halt die Fresse started , in which videos of well-known hip-hop musicians such as Olli Banjo , Kaas or Alpa Gun as well as unknown rappers are presented.

In September 2009, Aggro Berlin put the label's last two works on sale. On September 4th, the sampler Aggro Berlin Label No. 1: 2001-2009 , which contains a compilation of the albums released through the label and five exclusive pieces. Tony D's second solo album Für die Gegnaz! which was distributed through Universal Music . Unlike Sido and Kitty Kat, Tony D was not taken over by Universal Music .

Even after the development of new albums had ended, indexing proceedings were carried out against the label's publications. As a result, Flers Mixtape Airmax Muzik was placed on List A of the indexed recordings on September 30, 2009. Tony D's debut album Total Schaden has not been allowed to be sold to minors since November 11, 2009. At the beginning of 2010, the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors also indexed B-Tights Mixtape Ghetto Romantik . At the end of July, the last record, the sampler Aggro Berlin Label No. 1: 2001-2009 , the indexing.

The HDF Gold Award was presented for the first time in May 2011 . This is awarded to rappers whose clips in the series Halt the Fresse can have three million views. The first hip-hop musician with a correspondingly high number of hits was Alpa Gun. This was followed by an arrest warrant and automatic k. As part of the HDF Gold Awards, the award-winning rappers are shooting an exclusive video for the platform.

As a further concept, since January 2011, Aggro.TV has placed an artist at the center of the week under the title Aggro Alarm at irregular intervals. A new video will be published daily over the course of the week. The first rapper presented as part of this concept was Massiv , whose album Blut gegen Blut II was the focus. A theme week on Nazar followed in May . In June 2011, for the release of the album Zwiespalt (Weiss) Aggro Alarm was organized with Basstard. Other hip-hop musicians were Laas Unltd. , Eko Fresh , Massiv and Said. Aggro.TV has also been broadcasting the Rap finals on Wednesday since January 2011 .

Farid Bang was the fourth hip-hop musician to receive three million views on Aggro.TV. The video for the HDF Gold Award , which was announced for November 25, 2011 , was not published on the platform on the grounds that Bang's text was directed against Berlin. For the premiere of the movie Blutzbrüdaz in December 2011, aggro alarm theme weeks were organized over a period of three weeks , during which, among other things, excerpts from the film were presented on Aggro.TV. Furthermore, in December 2011, the videos and albums of the rapper Taktloss , which were made between 1998 and 2007, were made available to Aggro.TV, where they can be accessed free of charge.

On January 31, 2012, the EP X-Tasy by B-Tight was indexed more than five years after it was published by the BpjM. Aggro-Alarm- Weeks were presented again for the publications Kanackiş des Rappers Haftbefehl in early February as well as for Embryo by MoTrip and Dirty Mixtape by Kitty Kat in March . Another cooperation in the form of a theme week was entered into for the premiere of the film Turkish for Beginners . From April 30 to May 4, 2012, the program of the website was dominated by publication No. 415 by rapper Xatar . Various videos were also shot for the album Hinterhofjargon by rap duo Celo & Abdi and presented in an aggro alarm week.

reception

success

Some of the label's releases have been very successful. With Bushido's album Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline , the record company was able to enter the German charts for the first time. Most of the following albums and singles were also able to position themselves in the charts. Eleven albums reached the top 10 of the album charts. With regard to the singles, only NDW 2005 and Augen auf / Halt dein Maul were able to take top 10 positions. In addition, Aggro Berlin received a series of awards, the so-called Impala Awards, from the European Independent Music Publishers and Labels Association . In January 2008 the label received 20 awards in Cannes . The Berlin label received a total of 21 silver awards and seven gold awards. The gold awards were given for the sales of the albums Mask , Me and Me and My Mask , the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 4 and Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 as well as the single NDW 2005 .

Controversy and indexing

The label's artists and their marketing by those responsible for the record company have repeatedly been part of controversial debates. Critics have repeatedly described the rapper's lyrics as glorifying violence, misogynous and homophobic. The musicians were also accused of playing down drug use and nationalist tendencies. The public criticism was followed by various requests to index the record company's recordings. In the case of fourteen publications, indexing was carried out by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People.

meaning

The German media psychologist Jo Groebel commented on Aggro Berlin in a video two years after finishing work on the label. In it, he describes the label's beginnings as a “ cultural bomb ”, which was characterized by “ a drastically new aesthetic ”, a political focus and “ new forms of distribution and production ”. From the point of view of the scientist, the various controversies partly served the “ pose, attitude ” and “ artificial headlines ”, but also caused serious discussions. From Groebel's point of view, everything was represented at Aggro Berlin that “defines good hip-hop ” as a “ cultural phenomenon ”. The label's releases are " modern music of the 21st century ", which includes the show, the scandal, breaking taboos and the corresponding content. Furthermore, Aggro Berlin has a function that goes beyond the position of a music label and can be described as a " view of life ". In conclusion, the media psychologist explains that he found later publications less successful and tasteful, but expressed respect for the “ independent world ” that Aggro Berlin had built up.
