Rap on Wednesday

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rap on Wednesday , often abbreviated as RAM , was a three-weekly forming Cypher and Rapbattle - Internet TV format , which in various Städt s audiovisual was recorded. The event had gained national fame through its well-known participants and the regular broadcasts on YouTube and was Germany's largest live battle rap league.

history

At the initiative of the then Rap-am-Wednesday presenter Jonni Kalmanovich aka Ben Salomo , the Cypher was developed in 1999 and 2000 in a basement room of the Berlin ufaFabrik . The name Rap on Wednesday was based on the children's program Fun on Tuesday and because the ufaFabrik only had free space on Wednesday. At the turn of the millennium, the focus of the event was on Open Mic Sessions , in which today's rap greats like Sido , B-Tight , the Bassboxxx rappers Frauenarzt , MC Basstard , Mach One , Marvin Game , MC Bogy , Vokalmatador , Tony D and King Orgasmus One or Sera Finale as well as the rappers and actors Damion Davis and Mike Adler took part and got their first live experience there. Like the Royal Bunker , rap on Wednesday was a veteran of the Berlin rap scene and contributed significantly to the formation of the Berlin hip hop community. Since the ufaFabrik could not cope with the increasing number of visitors and no alternative venue could be found, the last Rap-on-Wednesday event took place in 2000 .

On May 5, 2010, the new edition of rap was resumed on Wednesday for the first time after a ten-year break. Since then, the event has taken place every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month in the Calabash Club in Berlin-Mitte. From the 3rd season, which started on September 19, 2012, the event was moved to Bi Nuu and now took place there. The self-described most real Cypher in Germany was in the 8th season. In the first season, the Berlin rapper Tierstar was able to secure the most King titles. At the end of the first season, rap was part of Europe's largest youth fair YOU on Wednesday with a special event . Even after the reactivation of the format, rap again attracted numerous well-known rappers from all over Germany on Wednesday . These occurred Kool Savas , Alpa Gun , Laas Unltd. and Morlockk Dilemma on stage as part of an exclusive. MC Bogy also actively competed in a freestyle battle , but had to admit defeat to rapper Atzenkalle.

Cihan Bilgin has directed the show since its sixth season.

The last Rap-On-Wednesday event took place on May 5, 2018. The Jewish founder Ben Salomo wanted to withdraw from the rap business due to anti-Semitic developments and thus also ended rap on Wednesday. Further Battlerap projects will take place on the YouTube channel.

Further developments

At the beginning of August 2015, in an interview with Visa Vie , Kool Savas was mostly negative about the development of the event. This is how the general rap level has changed since the Battle of Laas Unltd. no longer increased. He was particularly bothered by the disrespectful handling of the events surrounding ex-participant Percee .

That was stabbed then selbige after separating from his girlfriend and suicide committed. The events were then implemented tastelessly in punchlines by some participants for the purpose of provocation and attention from the audience . Here Sava's organizer Ben Solomon would have seen it as his duty to prevent such a thing. He also stated that he had not attended the event since then and that he wanted to keep it.

Before that, during a joint event with the similar format “Don't Let The Label Label You” (DLTLLY) at the 1st Berlin “HiphopCon” there was a scandal when the rapper P-Zak next to the rapper Gregpipe , insulted a large part of the people on stage and then pretended to want to keep a minute's silence for Percee after repeatedly making "Percee-Lines" during the battle. After the buhende audience as " sons of bitches insulted," the rapper Gregpipe threw a can, the event was then stopped short, however, brought to an end.

On April 19, 2018, organizer Ben Solomon announced the end of rap on Wednesday in its previous form. He observed and experienced “a large amount of real anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia and contempt for women”. The scene now has to consider how this can be reconciled with “hip-hop values such as tolerance and respect”. Since he was personally seriously threatened, he did not want to take part in the closing event. The following event, TopTierTakeover, organized by Tierstar, is now going on tour.

procedure

The event consisted of four parts:

  • The cypher
  • The Battlemania
  • The Battlemania Champions League (BMCL)
  • The after party

Cypher

The Cypher was comparable to an open mic event. Each person in the audience was allowed to ask for the microphone and then rap on randomly selected beats by the DJ (mostly DJ Pete) . The Cypher was used to gain experience and to present freestyles or your own texts to the audience and as a casting for the subsequent battle.

Battlemania

The battle was like a verbal exchange of blows, in which two opponents in the competition wanted to win the audience over by dissolving a fictional or real opponent and presenting themselves overly positive. The decisive factors here were the so-called punch lines , the counter attacks, the technology and the stage presence. At Rap on Wednesday, the battle between a total of eight participants was divided into four rounds:

  • Preliminary round
  • Semifinals
  • final
  • King finals (up to season 3)
  • BMCL - Battlemania Championsleague (from the 4th season to the last season)

In the preliminary round, the pairings drawn in each case compete against each other in the Freestyle category on the beat . No prescribed texts may be used. The rapper should attack his opponent with spontaneous rhymes with an opponent reference (also called punchlines, comparable to the punch line ). The semifinals also began with freestyle on the beat , in the second round the rappers dueled with prescribed texts on a beat, freestyle was not allowed here. If there was a tie after these two rounds, there was an a cappella round, where the rappers could perform both prescribed texts and freestyle. The whole thing took place a cappella without any background music. The a cappella is considered the premier class of the battle. The final consisted of two a cappella rounds per MC, if the vote was tied at the end, there was a freestyle exchange of blows. In the king finals, which was replaced by the Battlemania Champions League from season four, the champion of the current edition faced the king of the previous edition. The only decision was made by a cappella . The same concept, which is carried out over three rounds, was adopted for the Battlemania Champions League (BMCL). Here the encounters were known in advance, so that the MCs can only prepare for their opponents in order, among other things, to incorporate more opponent-related punchlines into the round.

The winner of each round was determined by the audience, who were allowed to express their enthusiasm with hand signals and volume, but only the raised hands were taken into account.

The enthusiasm for the rapper was evaluated as objectively as possible by the moderator in consultation with the RaM team, who then named the winner. Only at the BMCL did a jury made up of three people from the RaM environment decide.

Afterparty

The after party marked the end of the actual event and was no longer filmed.

Trivia

  • The rapper Liquit Walker was u. a. due to his appearances on Rap on Wednesday for the feature film Blutzbrüdaz .
  • The shut-the-face video by the rapper Tierstar was shot as part of a Rap-on-Wednesday event.
  • Actor and rapper Mike Adler plays the role of fictional music manager Mike Kinski in Rap Wednesday's videos . In the beginning he ended every episode with the statement 'German rap sucks, but here it gets better every day!'. In the meantime, the statement on 'German rap has already gotten better, but it's not enough for us!' adapted, and is also performed by Ben Solomon and Mike Fiction.
  • The Rap-am-Wednesday title anthem "Rap on Wednesday, everyone comes along, but if you don't have anything to do with hip-hop, you have to go!" Comes from the early days, from a freestyle by Sido .
  • On Wednesday , rap has its own chapter in the DVD documentary “In the Spot Berlin” by One Million Berlin .
  • Rap on Wednesday is comparable to international formats. The best known are King of the Dot in Canada , Don't Flop in Great Britain , FlipTop in the Philippines , the Ultimate Rap League or Grind Time in the United States , Rap Contenders in France and Versus Battle in Russia .
  • From December 27, 2012 to January 6, 2013, Rap was on Wednesday with a total of nine appearances as the accompanying act of why-rappst-du? -Tour from Kool Savas included .
  • At the show on February 6, 2013, from the perspective of the Rap-am-Wednesday team, there was a scandal, as Mike Fiction and Ben Solomon did not consider the early King finals (the reigning King Gier was prevented) to be “king finals”. The fan base, however, accused Ben Solomon and Mike Fiction of not treating the two finalists Mave and A-Jay with respect. At the next edition on February 20, Ben Solomon and Mike Fiction apologized to the Cypher and at the same time announced some additional rules that should avoid future controversies as in the previous show. In the case of early king finals, only the champion and not the king will be determined if the RaM team - in consultation with the audience - is of the opinion that the battle was not carried out at "king level". In addition, a committee consisting of three people - a Rap on Wednesday team member, a regular MC and another random member - was formed. This can using multiple vetoes , the so-called panel of viewers beyond the power of decision to be adopted unanimously, if you have two vetoes decide rap on-Wednesday - VIPs in three vetoes the formed decides body solely. The committee should be able to intervene if the audience judges according to highly subjective criteria, as this contradicts the competitive nature of a battle .
  • Rap on Wednesday was mentioned on three albums with 30-11-80, Asphalt Massaka 3 and Carlo Cokxx Nutten 3, which were at number 1 in the German album charts.
  • In Sido's song 30-11-80 , which is also the title of his fifth studio album, Afrob raps appreciatively about rap on Wednesday:

"I'm not a rap dogmatist, I don't break a stick / Or even speak of betrayal / Still I ask myself 'Where have the rappers gone?' / With RAM you are at the start "

  • The Düsseldorf rapper Farid Bang mentioned rap neutrally on Wednesday in his song Interview Gangster from the album Asphalt Massaka 3 :

"At the subway station I give Patrick's Bitch Cock / Because I'm the new bouncer for Rap on Wednesday"

  • Bushido, on the other hand, comments negatively on rap on Wednesday in his song POV from the album Carlo Cokxxx Nutten 3 :

" Barbecue is over and I'm fucking German hip-hop / drive-by at the Tuntentreff at Rap on Wednesday"
