Career

Kex Kuhl (2018)

Taha Cakmak was born in Augsburg in 1989. In the fourth grade, he first came into contact with hip-hop music when he heard a sampler by the producer Plattenpapzt , which featured the song King of Rap by Kool Savas . After finishing his school career, he moved to Stuttgart to study film at the Merz Academy . As a rapper, he first appeared as part of the crossover band Weekend Warriors. As part of the Reimliga Battle Arena , he presented himself for the first time as a solo artist under the pseudonym Kex Kuhl. Because of his fondness for battle rap, he became aware of the music event Videobattleturnier . There he was enthusiastic about the participants Weekend , Lance Butters and Dollar John, so that in 2012 he applied for the tournament himself. His first participation ended due to an illegal instrument change with the disqualification in the preliminary round. A year later he managed to advance to the round of 16 of the VBT. Kuhl also took part in the RapSparring competitions on the Youtube channel HometownTV in autumn 2013.

At the same time as these competitions, he began recording his first album. After a snippet was published on New Year's Eve, Make Säks not Love was released for free download at the end of February 2014. With #MOT des Splash! Like he took then participate in another online tournament. In October 2014, the rapper's second release followed with the EP Bartik . Afterwards he accompanied the concerts of the “Pubertour” of Rockstah as a support act . Under the name "Return of the Jägiritter" he completed another tour together with Duzoe, Dollar John and Scotch. In the summer of 2016 an EP followed with 5und30 on the Recordjet label . Ali As and ERRdeKa are represented as guest rappers . In spring 2018, Kex Kuhl signed an artist contract with Department Music . After the singles Müde , Alte Götter and Stokkholm , his debut album Stokkholm was released in mid-July . This was composed on an acoustic guitar and recorded in the studio without samples, with which Kuhl distanced himself stylistically from classic rap. In terms of content, he also concentrates on personal texts instead of the battle rap that has shaped his music for several years.

reception

The e-zine laut.de awarded four out of a possible five points in a review of the EP Bartik . According to the editor Dani Fromm, Kex Kuhl presented himself “so relaxed, credible and wonderfully unimpressed by all the fooling around in the local rap circus that it would be difficult to take anything away from him anyway.” The “musical background” also received praise. So this fits “splendidly everywhere”, achieve “the greatest possible effect with simple means” and breathe “in many places not even subtle Wu vibe.” Daniel Fersch dealt with EP 5und30 for MZEE . Kex Kuhl seems to be "somehow out of place in the hip-hop scene as a pierced, tattooed beard with a denim vest", but has "just as much on it as other rappers". The EP starts with "scratchy electric guitar riffs, energetic flow and a whole range of representative lines". At 5und30, Kuhl succeeded in “definitely a more than convincing start”. The only thing missing for the “bearded punk rapper” is a suitable label home.
