Reimliga Battle Arena

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reimliga Battle Arena (RBA for short) is a German-language online platform for organizing and conducting audio rap battles online.

regulate

In the RBA, two rappers meet in a battle. A battle usually consists of three rounds, each consisting of a round trip. The battles are judged by a jury in which each juror awards one point per round to the better rapper. The jurors decide on victory, draw and defeat in the battle. All rappers are listed in a table in different performance classes.

The jury currently consists of Xerxex, Punjizz, BlaDesa, PuebloEscobar, Poison S, Jenemy and MC BcJoe, the DJ jury, various test judges, as well as kay, Tenda and tho for administrative posts.

history

The Reimliga was a loose association of the German HipHop Underground from 1997. It was founded by the active members of the newsgroup de.alt.music.hiphop ("damh" for short). The members came from all over Germany and were usually young people who made rap music from their children's rooms . As usual in the hip-hop scene , everyone was the best - but there could only be one! So the wish arose within the newsgroup to battle each other . A set of rules was quickly drawn up collaboratively .
In order not to overload the data transfer rates of 56 kbit / s modem or 64 kbit / s ISDN and the associated dial-up and online costs for Internet access , the MP3 format with a low bit rate and a maximum length of 2 minutes per track was chosen. The files were exchanged via the company's own FTP server ftp.reimliga.de and posted in the de.alt.music.hiphop newsgroup . A competent jury rated the tracks and awarded points. The rounds were held according to the best-of-three mode . The Reimliga Battle Arena (RBA) was born.

In order to make the RBA available beyond the newsgroup de.alt.music.hiphop and to put it on a legally sound footing, the registered association Reimliga eV was founded on March 24, 2000 . The RBA still operates this today. From the year 2000 a database-based PHP software was developed which ran on the Linux server fame.reimliga.de . The first version was programmed by Thomas "tho" Richter . The web design came from the pen of Gerrit "Der LaKai" Donat . Bülent Caliskan took care of the server administration, the NNTP newsfeed and everything organizational . Members could register, arrange battles and upload audio files . The maximum lap time of 48 hours was automatically monitored, audio files in the wrong format were encoded into the correct format using the lame encoder and the members were informed in real time about the current status of their battle by email . The jury had easy access to all battles on its own page and was able to objectively submit its assessments independently of one another and, above all, of the public . At the end of a battle and after all jury evaluations have been received, the system has determined a winner, informed those involved of the result and automatically calculated and updated the table.

The Reimliga eV, as the operator of the RBA, was looking for sponsors in order to be able to finance the then still enormous costs for the acquisition of their own Internet server and the running hosting costs . If possible, these should come from the music industry . In the first year the platform from now was insolvent New Economy - Start-up "virtual volume" sponsored. The costs for the server housing , the 100Mbit / s internet access , as well as the used data volume cost the provider "7d AG" at that time approx. 700-1500 Deutsche Mark per month, and the trend is rising.

After the fall of the New Economy and the insolvency of the sponsor "Virtual Volume", Reimliga eV started negotiations with MZEE about a possible sponsorship . During a visit to the MZEE headquarters in Cologne , Ralf Kotthoff was convinced by Bülent Caliskan to continue operating the RBA under the domain rba.mzee.com and assuming all costs. The parties have agreed not to disclose details of this deal . After some very successful years under the care of MZEE and continuously falling prices for web hosting , Reimliga eV decided to run the Reimliga Battle Arena (RBA) itself. Since then, the RBA can be reached at the well-known address rba.de.

In addition to the website and the newsgroup de.alt.music.hiphop, the IRC channel #Reimliga on IRCnet was an elementary communication channel for the participants for a long time . This is currently experiencing a renaissance . At open.ircnet.net:6667, the German HipHop Underground meets irregularly in 2019/2020. All other hip-hoppers who find Facebook too mainstream and YouTube too commercial are cordially invited to log in and take part in the chat . The IRC channel #Reimliga is kept open by the IRC bots "damh1997" and "_-derAgent-_".

At the beginning of the RBA there were also irregular rhyme league meetings. The subsequent photos on the FTP server ftp.reimliga.de were legendary. Since 1998, over 80,000 battles have been fought in the RBA. For a long time it was the most important platform for German online rap battles.
