Beyond Divinity is a computer role-playing game from the Belgian developer Larian Studios , which was released for Windows in 2004 as the successor to the title Divine Divinity . The French company Ubisoft acted as publisher .

action

The action of Beyond Divinity takes place 20 years after the events of Divine Divinity . The player takes on the role of a servant of the divine and plays a paladin who hunts necromancers. During the fight with a particularly powerful necromancer, the paladin is transported to another universe by the demon Samuel and his soul is fused with that of a malicious death knight. Together, the paladin and the death knight must go in search of a way to separate their souls from each other again.

Gameplay

The gameplay largely corresponds to that of Divine Divinity , except that this time the player has two characters to choose from. Most of the time, the player can access both characters, but only one can be selected at a time. The other figure follows the selected character and is controlled by the program in battles. As is customary in role-playing games, each character has its own character statistics and equipment that can be expanded and developed by the player.

Beyond Divinity is divided into four acts. While the first is quite linear, the later acts give the player significantly more freedom of movement. In each act, the player characters can obtain a summoning doll with which a special creature (skeleton, demon, etc.) can be summoned. These can also be controlled directly by the player and support the player character in battle or be used as a porter.

In each act there is a so-called battlefield with traders and some optional, randomly generated dungeons. The player can teleport there at any time after activation.

Development history

The game was announced in June 2003 as Riftrunner and as an offshoot of Divine Divinity . It uses a revised version of the Divinity engine. In December 2003 it was announced that the game was renamed Beyond Divinity .

reception

The game received mixed reviews ( Metacritic : 73/100). David Bergmann from PC Games gave the game a fun rating of 74% on the grounds:

“But even these group dynamics, which are new for an action role-playing game, do not lift Beyond Divinity into the absolute top class. The assignments are too monotonous, the protagonists' constant taunts get on your nerves too quickly, the outcome of the fighting depends too much on chance. Above all, the numerous hidden traps cause frustration. "

Michael Graf from GameStar awarded 71%:
