Divinity: Original Sin is a turn-based fantasy role-playing game from the Belgian developer Larian Studios for Windows , Mac OS , Linux , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . It is the fifth game in the Divinity series and was released in the Windows version on June 30, 2014. The game was partially financed with the help of a crowdfunding campaign.

action

Scene of Divinity: Original Sin is, as in all games in the series, the fantasy world Rivellon. The action is set ahead of the events of the series debut Divine Divinity . The focus of the plot are the two player characters, a fighter and a huntress. The two figures are source hunters, members of a force of order that takes action against the use of forbidden magic. In the coastal town of Cyseal, the hero duo is supposed to investigate the murder of a magician. But the murder turns out to be just the beginning of a much bigger threat that could mean the end of the world.

Gameplay

There are two main characters whose skills and talents can be developed in different directions at the beginning of the game. The group of heroes consists of a maximum of four characters, for which two additional companions can be recruited during the course of the game. Since Divinity: Original Sin can be played either alone or cooperatively with a second player, in the first case the player controls and defines all the characters and their values, in the co-op mode , on the other hand, the player determines one of the two main characters and the second companion. The game's combat system is turn-based. The environment can be used in many ways for the fights. For example, fires can be extinguished by breaking water barrels or opponents standing in pools of water can be additionally damaged by using a lightning spell.

development

Even in the run-up to the development, Larian had been considering developing a turn-based game for a long time. However, since the studio lacked the support of a publisher, it never came to fruition. According to studio founder Swen Vincke, the idea of a cooperative game principle has existed in different forms since 1997, but has always fallen victim to cuts for various reasons. After the weak sales of Divinity 2 , the indebted development studio tried to implement its dreams without the financial support of a publisher. Larian began working on two projects, the strategy game Divinity: Dragon Commander and Original Sin . Original Sin was supposed to be the smaller project and appear before Dragon Commander , but it was increasingly popular internally. Therefore, the work on Dragon Commander was brought to an end early in order to invest all energies in the completion of Original Sin .

In order to be able to cope with the project financially, the studio resorted to various financing tricks that, according to its own statements, would have driven it to the verge of bankruptcy. Originally, the development team had only 1.5 million euros available, but the planning required a budget of three million euros. Until then, the money had come from bank loans and investor funds, among other things. In order to requisition additional funds to expand the scope of the game and to improve the reactivity of the game world, Larian started a crowdfunding campaign on the online platform Kickstarter.com on March 27, 2013 . The campaign was successful, including Paypal contribution fraud collected Larian within a month more than a million dollars from private supporters a. In January, Larian made the game available through the Early Access program of online provider Steam . This enabled players to buy and play the game at an early stage of development. In total, the development budget came to four million euros, according to other information it was 4.5 million euros.

After the game's release had been postponed several times, Divinity: Original Sin was finally released on June 30, 2014. The game also includes an editor with which you can develop your own additional content ( modifications ) for the game. As in previous games, the music for the game came from Kirill Pokrovsky, who died on June 1, 2015 at the age of 53.

A sequel under the title Divinity: Original Sin 2 was also successfully funded by Kickstarter and appeared after two years of development on September 14, 2017. An early access version was already available in September 2016 on Steam.
