Lance Butters (* 1988 in Friedrichshafen ) is the stage name of a German rapper who became known in particular for his participation in the video battle tournament ( VBT for short ). His trademark is a mask that covers his face, which he wears to protect his identity. Until 2019 he was under contract with the label Four Music .

Life

youth

Lance Butters grew up in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance and spent childhood and youth there. The latter was marked by the separation of his parents - an event that the artist will later grapple with musically.

"If parents split up because of insufficient feelings, how do I have a healthy relationship later?"

- Lance Butters

The early death of his father and the consequences for him and his siblings, in particular the considerably deteriorated relationship with his brother as a result, are also discussed in some publications. In his early twenties he moved to Ulm .

Beginnings as a rapper (2007-2011)

He gained his first experience as a rapper from 2006 to 2010 in various online battles in the Reimliga Battle Arena , followed by two participations in the video battle tournament . In 2010 he reached the 16th (against Tamo-Flage) and in 2011 the second round (against T-Jey). However, apart from a few guest appearances, for example for the rapper Weekend , he withdrew both times from the tournament and today expressly distances himself from this and similar formats. At the same time, he and the producer Bennett On published a large number of free downloadable free tracks on YouTube, some of which can now boast a seven-digit number of views. In 2011 they founded the Frank Castle Cooking Gang together with the Munich rapper coru , whose first and only album cooking sum was released in the same year via Bandcamp .

Start of career (2012-2015)

In the course of increasing popularity, Lance Butters released the limited EP selfisch in 2012 , which was sold out after a few days and was largely positively received by fans and press. Among other things, it was praised that, despite the artist's explicit distancing from battle rap, the sound image is still strongly oriented towards his old style.

In 2013 he signed a contract with the Four Music label , which released the EP futureshit on July 12, 2013 . Despite slightly poorer ratings compared to the previous release, Butters achieved a position in the German album charts at number 32 for the first time. With the single of the same name futureshit , he also reached number 73 in the Austrian charts.

In June of the same year a studio album was announced for the beginning of 2014, but the release date of Blaow was delayed until May 8, 2015. As with the previous releases, Butters also used instrumentals by Bennett On for this album, while the Rapper Ahzumjot chose to mix the titles - contrary to the label owners' initial doubts. Previously, due to an ironic studio report in fan circles, it was wrongly assumed that Lance Butters would like to orient his music to current pop music in the future. The video uploaded to YouTube was created with the purpose of parodying other rappers such as Prinz Pi , Sido or Cro with regard to their musical change and was only used for promotion. Blaow placed in the Austrian (6th place) and Swiss album charts (31st place). In Germany it was number 2 on the album charts and stayed there for three weeks.

Second studio album (since 2016)

Together with his friend Ahzumjot, he released the EP Die Welle on October 4, 2016 . The second studio album Angst was released on October 12, 2018 and entered the German (10th place) and Austrian (11th place) as well as the Swiss album charts (70th place). At the same time, the release marked the end of the collaboration with Bennett On. In 2019 Butters left Four Music and since then has criticized the work methods of such record companies, which in his opinion do not sufficiently reward the artists.

“We're talking about the fact that I had a label deal that completely cut my air financially because I just signed a contract. [...] I have 60 million streams or 65 million streams, I haven't seen a cent of them. "

- Lance Butters

The EP LONER was surprisingly released on April 21, 2020 via Corn Dawg Records. A tour of the same name will also follow.

features

Lance Butters wore an Iron Man mask and hat until the release of futureshit . Since then he has appeared with alternating masks, some of which differ greatly in color and shape. Since he generally tries to avoid appearances in public, he is considered an extremely rare guest at music events and festivals. He himself describes his style as arrogant and unsympathetic. The drawn out and particularly stressed rhymes at the end of the line are the greatest musical characteristic alongside his distinctive gestures. In contrast to the extreme effort to protect his identity and privacy are his texts, which deal with personal problems such as the separation of parents, the death of his father, the relationship with his brother and the addiction to cannabis .
