The video battle tournament ( VBT for short ) was a German-language rap tournament organized by the website rappers.in from 2007 to 2018 . YouTube served as the platform for the uploaded videos, some of which have several million views . The VBT is considered to be the most successful format of this type of battlerap . Some rappers like Weekend and BattleBoi Basti became popular through the tournament. Similar formats are the JuliensBlogBattle ( JBB ) organized by Julien Sewering and the Reimliga Battle Arena ( RBA ). During weddings, the rappers.in site received 320,000 visitors a day. Since its peak in 2012/2013, the importance of the competition has waned. With the VBT 2018 rappers.in ended the hosting of the tournament. At the end of May 2020, the organizers' successor project started with 1battle .

General

In the first few years the VBT was more of an insider event for the German hip-hop scene. But at the latest since the VBT Splash! At the beginning of 2012 it gained enormous popularity. In the meantime, former VBT participants such as Weekend or BattleBoi Basti and their crews appear at festivals such as the Mile of Style or the Splash! on.

The video Battle tournament is all about, to his opponent discredit , in the hip-hop jargon Dissen called, with many participants personally know and these insults are usually sporty to understand. The musical quality of the battles is often of high quality and the videos have almost always been shown in HD since the 2011 tournament .

perception

Germany

On March 10, 2013, the program Schau dich schlau reported on the VBT on RTL II Now .

The VBT has served as a springboard for several artists. Among others, the rappers BattleBoi Basti , EstA , Lance Butters , Weekend and Punch Arogunz won a record deal with well-known labels. BattleBoi Basti, Lance Butters, Weekend and EstA were also able to celebrate some chart successes in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Punch Arogunz published the label sampler Beuteschema together with Baba Saad and EstA . The debut album Carnivora was released on February 7, 2014. Weekend, the winner of the 2011 tournament, filmed half of the city of Gelsenkirchen as the setting for his tournament entries on the way to the final . Other participants in the VBT are Kico and Pimf , who run their own label and concert agency together with KWU Records. Both released a label sampler with 25 tracks and played at a concert with Busta Rhymes . Since July 2013, Kico has been under contract with Made Music together with rapper SadiQ . The label was brought to life from the KWU environment. In 2016 the rapper ÉSMaticx also released her debut album. She is under contract with the Egoland label .

An announcement for the VBT Splash! Edition 2013 was made in Splash! released. The later VBT Splash winner Persteasy offered the entries he had submitted to the 2013 competition as an audio package for free download. Several rappers who have participated in the VBT have already been interviewed by the Juice or received reviews on their publications. rappers.in has launched its own VBT magazine especially for the tournament , in which the individual participants are presented and reports about the tournament. Rappers.in also organizes the VBT Tour , a concert tour on a national level in which participants of the video battle tournament take part.

Switzerland

The Swiss VBT has been taking place in Switzerland since 2012 and is similar to and based on the German format. This event was already mentioned in the Basler Zeitung . The TV station Joiz has also reported from the VBT.

Participation and rules

Anyone who submits a rap video produced especially for VBT and who has an artist page at rappers.in, which is activated by registering on the website, is qualified. The jury also consists of registered users of rappers.in, who, however, are not allowed to participate in the VBT as rappers at the same time. Anyone who submits a trial evaluation that meets the criteria will be admitted to the jury. In addition, there has been a user vote since 2011, in which all registered users vote on the winner. It counts as one jury vote and ensures the decision in the event of a tie. In the VBT Elite 2016, a user vote was also determined for the first time via YouTube.

The tournament will be played in a knockout system . In the beginning, rounds were back and forth throughout, in which each opponent can choose his own beat for his first round. In the second half of the season, the opponent must then counter the beat of the first half of the season. First half of the season and the subsequent second half of the season are compared and evaluated. Due to the increasing number of participants, this mode has only been used from the 16th finals since the VBT 2010. In the preliminary rounds, an instrumental from the rappers.in beat pool must be selected, on which both opponents submit their round, which is then evaluated by the jury.

If one of the two opponents does not submit a round in a battle, the other rapper will advance without a fight, i.e. without a jury decision. There is also half a penalty point for every half hour late upload. However, since technical difficulties (e.g. server problems) sometimes arise, this rule is often not applicable or the opponent waits for the opponent to submit his round so that both collect the penalty points.

Links to other rap tournaments

In 2012, the YouTube celebrity JuliensBlog organized the JuliensBlogBattle (JBB). The rappers Kico, T-Jey and 4Tune , known through the VBT, also took part. When their videos were clicked millions of times there, other VBT members such as Weekend, Battleboi Basti and 3Plusss also appeared in guest refrains of the participants there. Rapper 4Tune emerged as the tournament winner. Because of this, the awareness of the VBT increased more and more. In the rappers.in forum alone, over 400,000 users are registered, which is only a fraction of the passively watching rap fans.

When the JuliensBlogBattle became better known and the click numbers of the JBB began to surpass those of the VBT, a statement came from the VBT in January 2015. The VBT makers around Up commented on Julien's blog with the words:

“With his format, he serves a target group that we don't envy him for, even if it is quantitatively superior to ours. [...] This type of entertainment is the same as that shown by Bild and RTL. "

The difference between VBT and JBB has been shown as follows:

“The VBT and the JBB differ fundamentally in their philosophies. Our aim is to offer a stage for competition between talented MCs and for newcomers, not to breed a soulless click machine. "

In connection with rap on Wednesday , the VBT appeared, among other things, as Atzenkalle the outro in the final second half of the Battleboi Bastis against Weekend at the VBT Splash! rapped. BattleBoi Basti also appeared on Rap on Wednesday.

Many rappers who take part in the VBT are or were also active in the Reimliga Battle Arena (RBA).

For the tenth anniversary, the VBT organized the federal states battle (BLB) together with the RBA . It started in April 2017 and ran until February 2018. Insight Job (Talf, Markant and Neko) won for North Rhine-Westphalia .

2013

1680 rappers took part in the VBT in 2013. The tournament began with three preliminary rounds and one intermediate round before it went to the 64th finals. One innovation was that rappers.in members could give favorite points to a fixed number of participants. In the pairing draw up to and including the 32nd final, the rappers with the most points competed against those with the fewest. From the 16th final, the pairings were drawn and the tournament was to be played for the first time in the double knockout system . However, shortly before the results of the 16th on Facebook were published, the organizer announced that, as in previous years, it would continue to be played in the classic knockout system because many participants would not submit any more rounds in the event of a defeat would. In the semifinals, SpliffTastiC prevailed against BlaDesa and ME-L Techrap against Duzoe (due to abandonment). SpliffTastiC won the final with 58:27 against M-EL Techrap.

After the final results were published, it was publicly announced that the video battle tournament will be paused for the time being and that this will not take place in 2014. The main reason for this was the oversaturation of the market. On the one hand, there were many imitation formats, on the other hand, the organization of a tournament that took place twice a year was a great burden for the operators of the site. So the decision was made to concentrate on the Splash edition in 2014.

2015

After a VBT Splash Edition took place in the previous year, a video battle tournament was held again in 2015, although a Splash Edition was dispensed with this year. A total of 1620 qualification videos were submitted. There were three preliminary rounds and an intermediate round. Then it went from the 64th Filnale to the finale, which was ultimately decided by the then generally unknown rapper Jenemy. He prevailed against his competitor Frank Shirt. Jenemy got a recording deal with Groove Attack .

1092 rappers will take part in VBT 2018. It started in April 2018 and, according to the organizers, will be the last tournament of its kind. There were three preliminary rounds before the 64th final. Due to extended round deadlines, the tournament lasted for the first time into the following year. In the final, Peat was finally able to prevail against Engine Itano.

2012

At the beginning of 2012 a special VBT was held, the winner of which was a 30-minute appearance on the Splash! -Festival 2012. All rappers who had made it to at least the semi-finals in the previous VBTs (from 2008) were allowed to take part in this tournament. Nine artists took part, the remaining seven contestants were chosen from 30 selected applicants by user voting.

The jury for the special edition did not consist of users of rappers.in, but of well-known big names in the scene, such as Morlockk Dilemma or Falk Schacht .

In contrast to the regular VBT, a tournament tree was drawn before the start, which specified the further pairings. Rounds back and forth were only included from the semi-finals. Ultimately, the 2011 VBT winner, Weekend, won the final against BattleBoi Basti 13: 9.

2013

On February 1st, 2013 the 16 participants for the second VBT Splash Edition tournament were announced. The rappers.in users had the opportunity to choose their favorites from 50 proposed candidates. These were 4tune , akne, DirtyMaulwurf , DollarJohn, donetasy, EmGi, ÉSMaticx , EstA , HappyBeckmann, Kico, Mikzn70, Persteasy , Pimf , Punch Arogunz , Scotch and vist. Unlike the VBT splash! Edition the year before, it wasn't just the tournament winner who won a 30-minute appearance at the Splash! -Festival, but also three of the remaining 15 participants. The jury selected the inferior participants who particularly stood out in the course of the tournament and approved them for public voting. From this survey, 4tune, EstA and Kico received further appearances on the Splash!

The jury reserved the right to impose sanctions against the participating MCs if the lyrics contain misanthropic or racist songs. The jury consisted of Alexander Up Ryck, Weekend (two-time VBT winner 2011 and 2012), Falk Schacht , Florence Lupa Bader, FR , Julian Gupta, Marc Leopoldseder, Rhymin Simon , Selcuk Erdogan and Thomas Resch.

Before the start, a tournament tree was drawn that specified the further pairings. The eight participants with the most user votes were drawn against the eight participants with the fewest votes. In contrast to the Splash! Edition 2012, there were rounds back and forth right from the round of 16.

The tournament was won by Persteasy, a rapper from Kiel, who defeated 4tune 18: 8 in the final. In addition to the appearance on the Splash, he was also support on Weekends autumn tour.

VBT Elite 2016

The VBT Elite 2016 went back to the roots. The competition was limited to 64 participants and therefore began with the 32nd final. Half of them were selected by the rappers.in team, the other half by the associated forum. The jury has also downsized. Nothing has changed in the rules themselves. In the semifinals, ME-L Techrap, one of the two winners of the VBT Splash 2014, prevailed against VBT veteran T-Jey and MC Baum against Talf. ME-L Techrap won the final against MC Baum with 17:12. He received a trip for two to New York City and a cash prize of 1,000 euros.

meaning

The rappers.in forum consists of more than half a million members. The videos are not only discussed in the forum, but also commented on and rated on Facebook and YouTube . Some participants have now received professional contracts. So Lance Butters was able to sign with Four Music . There he released his EP Futureshit in 2013 , which reached number 32 in the German single charts. Weekend signed with the Chimperator label , which Cro is also under contract with. In June, BattleBoi Basti's debut album Pullermatz was released via BMG Rights Management . The album reached number 20 in the German and number 25 in the Austrian charts. The image of the rapper as a twelve-year-old child trying to be a battlerapper was essentially shaped during the VBT. EstA's album EstAtainment was released on June 28, 2013 via Baba Saad's label Halunkenbande . The first release appeared as a VBT edition with some of his battle tracks from Splash! -VBT 2013. The sound carrier entered the German charts at number 11. On August 28, 2013, rapper Punch Arogunz , another participant of the VBT from the label Halunkenbande , was signed after he denied having had contact with the record company in May. It is represented on the label sampler Beuteschema , which appeared in October 2013. Other artists who have already released professional albums are ÉSMaticx , Mauli , 3Plusss , Pimf , Gio and 4Tune .
