Chimperator Productions is a Stuttgart-based independent label that mainly works in the hip-hop sector. It was founded in 1999 by Sebastian Andrej Schweizer, Christian Schädle and Steffen Wendelstein.

1999-2004

Chimperator Productions was founded in 1999 by Sebastian Andrej Schweizer , Christian Schädle and Steffen Wendelstein as a platform for publications by the Stuttgart hip-hop groups Supreme Techtics, Bejone & Vince and Kesselkost. One member from each of the three bands took on the role of partner in the label. Steffen Wendelstein was active as a rapper in the Supreme Techtics group under the pseudonym Steven Styler, Christian Schädle was involved as DJ Skully at Kesselkost and Schweizer was a member of Bejone & Vince. The three bands together formed the "golden mean". 1999 with So it is of Supreme Techtics the first recordings over Chimperator Productions released. Two years later the vinyl album Object of Desire by Kesselkost followed and at the end of 2002 the Kesselkost EP Hidden Hits . At the beginning of 2004 Schweizer signed a distribution contract for Chimperator Productions with rough trade . With words, soul and spirit from Supreme Techtics, the first publication of the label distributed across Germany via rough trade appeared in the same year . In addition, Chimperator Productions moved into its first office in the Stuttgart Filmhaus at the end of 2003.

In 2004 the Stuttgart hip-hop duo Maeckes & Plan B received an artist contract with Chimperator Productions . The two rappers then used the label to release their debut album Dayz of the Championz . Furthermore, Steffen Wendelstein, who was responsible for the graphics and had acted as one of the partners, left the label in 2004 to emigrate to Japan. Wendelstein was then replaced by Kodimey Awokou, a member of the Kesselkost group, who also released albums as a solo artist. Sebastian Andrej Schweizer wrote his diploma thesis in 2004 on the subject of “Founding a label - business plan for a label. Theory and Practice ”, the results of which he transferred to his work with Chimperator Productions . Afterwards he studied "Music Business" at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim. At the end of 2004, the Stuttgart label organized its first tour, the "When the South is in the house, oh my God" tour was dubbed. The rappers Maeckes & Plan B, Kodimey, Andrrrej and PF Squad took part in this. The label also left its office and moved into the former premises of the Cumulus cultural office in the youth center in Stuttgart.

2005-2009

In 2005 Maeckes released The Better Mateja Kezman Tonträger on the label. In the same year, another founder, Christian Schädle, left the company. He was replaced by Niko Papadopoulos, who subsequently took care of the commercial management and coordination of the Internet mail order company of Chimperator Productions . He is currently studying economics at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. From now on, Schweizer and Papadopoulos acted jointly as managing directors and Schweizer kept the work areas of artist marketing and development. Since the new composition of the shareholders, the label has been operating as "Awokou, Papadopoulos, Schweizer GbR". In 2006 Steffen Posner became a partner in the label. As a so-called " booker ", he organizes the concert performances of the label's musicians.

The following releases were Als waers the album by Maeckes and Plan B, Neo Geo by Kodimey and Als we were friends of Maeckes and Plan B. In 2006 and 2007 Maeckes and Plan B were also able to host the hip-hop festival Splash! gain awareness. In 2007, the BeatEm'Up production team was signed. This published a sampler in September of that year, on which the artists of Chimperator Productions as well as guest rappers like Gregpipe, Ali A $ , Tua and Animus are represented.

At the end of 2007 Maeckes and Plan B, together with Kodimey and the rappers Tua, Kaas and Sucuk Ufuk, completed a concert tour through eleven cities under the title Drrreckig Süd Tour 2007 . In 2008 Maeckes released the album Kunst über Vernunft with the singer Celina and then began to work with Kaas, Plan B and Tua on the first album of the newly formed band Die Orsons , which as a group got a contract with Chimperator Productions . On July 25, 2008, the group's first album The Album was released. Maeckes and Plan B also accompanied the Americans Brother Ali and Atmosphere in 2008 on their tour of Germany. Another tour followed as the accompaniment of Casper and Prince Pi . After the label Optik Records of Berlin based Kool Savas announced its closure in 2008, the Reutlinger Kaas, who had previously worked for Savas' label and toured with it, was signed as a new addition.

In March 2009, the debut album of Kaas under the title should be D: Amokzahltag be published. In the song Amok Payday , which was also made as a video , the rapper described a rampage in a school from the point of view of the gunman. Two days before the planned publication took place in the nearby city to Stuttgart Winnenden to a school shooting a 17-year-old. As a reaction to the events, those responsible for the label had the video removed from the Internet and decided not to publish Amokzahltag: D for the time being. In May 2009 Kaas album was released under the new title The Album formerly known as Amok Payday: D , on which the piece Amok Payday was replaced by Amok Nachtrag . Kaas had already completed a previously announced tour with Kodimey and Tua in April. Kaas debut album, which entered the German charts at number 100, was the first time that the independent label was able to make it onto the charts.

The Orsons' second album was released on October 16, 2009. The previously released song Souljah Boy from Because yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, Orsons was featured on US hip-hop blogs and played on the Hot 97 radio station . The album was also able to place in the album charts at number 79. The Orsons' Aqua Robot Tour also took place in October . At the end of 2009, Schweizer signed an edition contract with Sony ATV / Music Publishing . In February 2010 the label released a Tua record for the first time. Entitled silence the EPs were fast and now the Reutlingers republished.

2010-present

In July 2010 Tua also signed a contract with the Stuttgart label. Maeckes released his first album KIDS on March 26, 2010 . With this he rose to number 96 in the album charts. The musician also completed the Null Kids Tour in 2010 . Another commercial release followed on December 3, 2010, the album Evigila by Tua and Vasee . On Christmas Eve 2010 Chimperator Productions made a package of 54 songs from various releases of the label available for download free of charge for three days . Under the title “2011 miles and runnin”, the label organized a New Year's Eve party in the Stuttgart Club Mono , at which Plan B and Kara Ben performed a so-called “show cooking” and the joint album by Tua and Vasee was presented live.

Kaas released his second album Love, Sex and Twilight Zone in May 2011 . It rose to number 39 on the album charts, making it the label's best-ever placement. Kaas then went on a joint tour with Favorite , whose album was released on the same day as Love, Sex and Twilight Zone . In the summer, Kaas' group The Orsons was signed to the major label Universal Music Group . Sebastian Andrej Schweizer then stated that “after the success of the Orsons at the independent level”, the contract with Universal was the “next logical step” .

In October 2011 took Chimperator Productions with Cro another rap artists under contract. Cro appeared shortly afterwards as support on eight dates of the Glow Tour 2011 of the Norwegian band Madcon . On December 2, 2011, Cros Mixtape Easy was released as a free download on the label's redesigned homepage, which was released on the same day. On January 1st, 2012, Chimperator Productions founded the booking agency Chimperator Live in cooperation with 0711 Entertainment GmbH . This takes over the organization of tours and events for the artists Die Orsons, Maeckes, Cro, Tua, Kaas, and Plan B. In addition, a cooperation with FOUR Artists was decided, who are also to organize performances by The Orsons. Steffen Posner appears as managing director of Chimperator Live . The rapper Ahzumjot was signed to the agency Chimperator Live as a further artist in mid-January . Furthermore, Die Orsons accompanied Herbert Grönemeyer as the opening act as part of his ship traffic tour .

After the publication of the music video for the song Easy by the artist Cro on November 22, 2011, received a great response on Facebook and YouTube and received 300,000 views after just a few days, it was widely received in the media in the first half of 2012, including reports at Spiegel Online and in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In addition, the video was posted on December 2, 2011 via the American site hypetrak . According to Sebastian Andrej Schweitzer, it was the first German music video that was ever shared via hypetrak . One week after the release of the music video Easy, Chimperator Productions put Cro's mixtape of the same name on the Internet as a free download. The title song was later re-released as a commercial single after it had already been available online for free for over 3 months and immediately landed at number 2 in the German single charts - determined by Media Control. The song has now reached 3-fold gold for over 450,000 singles sold. Even before the video was released, Chimperator Productions was in talks with major labels to negotiate a possible deal. After the success and the steadily increasing number of clicks on the video, the discussions and negotiations intensified. The shareholders of Chimperator Productions decided, "after long and good negotiations with possible partners", in the end to release Cro on their own label and without outside help. Sebastian Andrej Schweizer said: "We brought Cro to the current level on our own and with our own strength and we also want to take the next step without a 'major machine' in the background." In February 2012 Chimperator Productions signed a contract for a cooperation with Groove Attack GmbH. Groove Attack took over the distribution of the upcoming album by artist Cro . With the debut album Raop , the independent label was able to reach number 1 in the German charts for the first time . In addition, the album also entered Austria at number 1 . Thus was raop the hitherto greatest success of Chimperator Productions .

In mid-July 2012, the musician Muso received an artist contract with Chimperator Productions . In September 2012 the band SAM followed as another act of the label. On September 28, 2012 the band Die Orsons together with Cro and their featuring Horst & Monika took 5th place at the eighth Bundesvision Song Contest .

On October 2nd, 2012 the mixtape ZWEInullZWÖLF by the band SAM was released . The release was a re-release, as the mixtape had already been released as a free download on March 23, 2012. In October, the album The Chaos and Order by Die Orsons reached number 12 in the German charts in its first week of sales. It was the band's third album overall. For the music label Chimperator Productions this meant the second album chart placement by a contracted artist within a year.

On November 6th, the music label Chimperator Productions Cro presented a platinum award for more than 200,000 sold copies of its Raop album at its sold-out concert in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart . He also received a platinum award for his single Easy and a gold award for the single Du , which was released on June 29, 2012.

In January of 2013 the album was raop of Cro for the European Independent Album of the Year Award 2013 nominated. At the start of Musikmesse Frankfurt 2013, the label Chimperator Productions received the PRG Lea Live Entertainment Award in the category "Promotion of Young Talent of the Year" on April 9, 2013 . On April 19, 2013, SAM's EP Wir was released via Chimperator Productions . On June 7, 2013, Chimperator Productions received the Music Award Region Stuttgart (MARS) . The company was awarded in the categories "National Company" and "Mars 2013 Artist / Band". In June of the same year, Cro released a special edition of his album Raop called Raop + 5 . At this point in time, Raop had sold more than 400,000 copies and thus achieved double platinum status. His debut album Am Wochen Rapper was announced for the end of August and went straight to number 3 in the German album charts. On August 5, 2013, Chimperator Productions published its mixtape Fernweh and offered it as a free download on the Internet.

In January 2014, the sales company Groove Attack GmbH bought Chimperator Productions . Sebastian Andrej Schweizer said "Groove Attack now offers a portfolio similar to that of a major, but has retained the character of an indie distribution." On February 28, 2014, Chimperator Productions released the album TTP by the band SAM . The album was able to place in the top 30 of the German charts . On June 5, 2014, the music video by the artist Cro ran for 2 hours at a time on the German music television channel VIVA . The broadcaster wrote about this campaign: "In honor of Cro, VIVA is launching a one-time campaign: On the occasion of the video premiere of" Traum ", Cro's new video, we will be leaving the clip for you on June 5th from 13:30 for a full 2 ​​hours to run." One day later, on June 6, 2014, the second album was released, entitled Melodie von Cro . It reached number 1 in the charts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The single Traum entered the charts at number 1 in Austria, but at number 2 in Germany and Switzerland. At that time , Chimperator Productions was able to place 7 titles by artist Cro in the top 100 of the German single charts. In September 2014, the artist Teesy took part in the Bundesvision Cong Contest and took third place for Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to working in the music sector , Chimperator Productions also worked in the book business. Managing director Sebastian Andrej Schweizer wrote together with Markus Brückner, who is under contract with the sister company Department Music under the pseudonym Psaiko.Dino , a retrospective book from the past few years entitled Easy Does It -Cro, the mask and all the rest . The book was published on October 8, 2014 by Bastei Lübbe AG and was number 14 on the Spiegel bestseller list. Sebastian Andrej Schweizer described it in an interview as a “kind of diary from getting to know each other until shortly after the first album”, he said the book “illuminates on the one hand the whole band development including the backstage stories and on the other hand the music industry and how it all works. It's not just about Cro, it's 'all the rest' as well.
