(2011)

TAFKAAZ: D (Abbreviation for The Album formerly known as Amok Paytag: D ) is the first album by the German rapper Kaas . It was mostly produced by hip hop musician Tua . TAFKAAZ: D was released on May 22nd, 2009 via the Stuttgart label Chimperator Productions and entered the German album charts at position 100 . The previously published music video Amokzahltag was controversially discussed in the media because of its portrayal of a fictional rampage shortly before the rampage in Winnenden .

Creation and publication

Lukas Michalczyk, Kaas's real name, recorded a large number of pieces in the Bassquiat Studios in Reutlingen for several years . Influenced by his experiences as an outsider with depression, he wrote mainly songs that convey a pessimistic attitude towards life. In 2007 there was a turning point in the musician's biography which, according to Kaas, was caused by a “religious” or “spiritual” experience: “If you describe this experience, then you lock it up - you can in the end not put into words at all. It is something unspeakable. […] At that moment, I suddenly realized that there is a God, that there is this inexplicable thing that makes life beautiful. ”In an interview, Kaas said that he had found happiness for himself at this time and that since then, among other things, he has refrained from consuming alcohol. The rapper's lifestyle was then also reflected in his other recordings, which are characterized by positive themes, especially love . Kaas projected his résumé onto the concept of his album. To illustrate his personal change, the album begins with older songs that are still characterized by a misanthropic attitude. In the further course the mood changes and positive topics come to the fore.

The release of the album was announced in January 2009 for March 13, 2009. It should, under the title Amokzahltag: D be published. After the first edition of the album was produced, it had to be pulped due to a production error. The master had jumped in two places, which was not noticed when listening. As a result, all albums from the first edition jumped in two places. The albums had to be re-produced, so the release date for Amokzahltag: D was moved to March 20, 2009.

The first music video was shot for the song Amok Payday . In this, Kaas describes a rampage from the perpetrator's point of view and also goes into his motives. In terms of content, it is based on the musician's youth. For the visual implementation of the theme, scenes from the film Amok by Peter Lenkeit from the Lazi Academy Esslingen were used. At the beginning of the video, a quote from Kaas is faded in, reflecting the musician's intention: “With this song I want to inspire people to turn their aggressions into art by writing books, painting pictures or composing pieces of music about their feelings. With this song I want to draw attention to the fact that the reason for these rampages is the lack of charity in our society. ”Furthermore, the rapper demands that outsiders, above all, be met“ with kind love ”. Following the text panel, a notice is shown for the consumer, warning of the violent scenes in the video. The music broadcaster MTV refused to broadcast the clip due to "explicitly depicted scenes of violence" and also referred to the danger of imitation, so that the video could only be seen on the label's homepage and on some video portals.

After fifteen people were shot by a schoolboy during the Winnenden rampage on March 11, 2009 , the media made Kaas' video part of the public reappraisal of the crime. The rampage was discussed in the show Hart but fair and an excerpt from the video Amok payday was presented in this context . Wolfgang Bosbach , then deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, commented on the recording of the title: “It glorifies violence, it is seriously harmful to young people. Something like that doesn't belong in the net, but unfortunately all the dirt on earth can be found there. Politicians must not turn a blind eye to this, so that something like this does not go around the globe. "The magazine Stern dealt with the media coverage of the rampage and editor Sophie Albers declared that Kaas is" becoming a symbol of a gap in understanding [...], which has to be overcome so urgently in order to prevent the next tragedy. ”Albers criticized the fact that the discussion participants from Hart but fair and other programs did not address the warning shown at the beginning of the video and the motives of a killer described by Kaas only perceive the description of the act. In the cultural program ttt - titel, thesen, temperamente , the editors Thorsten Mack and Sophia Naim dealt with the theming of rampages in hip-hop music in general and Kaas' title in particular. From their point of view, songs like Amok Payday are a " seismograph for frustration and aggression". Dieter Moor demanded in his moderation that rappers should act more responsibly and distance themselves from the "negative heroes" in their songs as figures of identification.

As a result of the events in Winnenden, Chimperator Productions was forced to remove the video for Amok Payday from the various Internet platforms and initially not to publish Kaas' album. From Sophie Albers' point of view, the label shows more "piety and compassion [...] than most opinion multipliers in the republic." After Chimperator Productions published a press release following the rampage, Kaas made his first statement to the Süddeutsche Zeitung at the end of March . He sees no problem in the media criticizing the video, but expressed his displeasure with the, in his view, one-sided and incomplete reporting.

Kaas' album was released on 22 May 2009 under the title The Album formerly known as Amok payday: D . When the album was reprinted , the intro and Amok payday were replaced by Lovemovement Anthem and Amok addendum . The 3000 covers of the first edition, which were not reprinted, were individually redesigned by Kaas himself. Kaas manually re-labeled the track list and came up with a separate album title for each front cover. In a further edition, which was pressed after the first 3,000 copies had been sold, the new title TAFKAAZ: D and the list of titles were printed. The reprints included 8,000 CDs.

At the beginning of August 2009, the Tübingen public prosecutor's office, which had dealt with Kaas' video after the Winnenden rampage, stated that the clip was "not clearly glorifying violence". The video is protected by artistic freedom, as the rapper shows "violence is not a solvent". A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said that although one could get the idea that the video played down violence, this was only an interpretation.

content

Texts

The central theme of TAFKAAZ: D is love - how it feels and what it means. The imagination also plays a major role in the rapper's lyrics. Stylistically, some songs are written in the rap form of storytelling . These mainly deal with the loss of people. Kaas claims to write childish stories that should, however, be taken seriously. From his point of view, the meaning of his texts only becomes apparent to the listener when he or she ignores the logic . He tells stories "that Kafka would have told if he had been happy."

In the introductory song Lovemovement Anthem , Kaas characterizes the feeling of love. The stanzas represent lists of the properties of love. This is described as “patient”, “not dogged”, “friendly” and “not resentful”, among other things. The importance of love is emphasized in the refrain: “The world needs sweet love in heart and stomach. Love is so beautiful, do you think so too? The world needs sweet love in heart and stomach. Take your favorite person in your arms and press them firmly. ”At the end of the piece, Kaas reads excerpts from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians . Love is also characterized in this excerpt, known as The Song of Solomon of Love .

Amok Addendum replaces the song Amok Payday of the original album version. It addresses the media coverage of Amok Payday and serves to justify the rapper. At the beginning of the play, a moderation from TV presenter Frank Plasberg from the show is played hard but fair . In it, Plasberg announced the clip on Amok Payday as part of the discussion on the Winnenden rampage . In the text Kaas gives his opinion that the reasons for a rampage are profound and cannot be reduced to computer games like Counter-Strike or the music of Marilyn Manson . In the media coverage, the rapper was put into the role of the culprit from his point of view ("They made Kaas Marilyn Manson"). Another point of criticism addressed by Kaas is the misappropriation of his "love message", an introductory text in the video for Amok Payday , in which the reader is called upon to charity in order to prevent such violence. In the second verse, Kaas cites the lack of imparting values and the materialistic striving that is generated, for example, by advertising (“It's easy in a society that teaches you that you're annoying when you're not wearing the great shoes and drive the expensive car. That tells you that nobody fucks you if you have pimples: ' Buy here' the acne remedy, which you will owe your happiness to! '"). In the third verse, Kaas justifies the change to the album, which he made out of consideration for those affected. At the end of the song, Kaas summarizes his intention when it comes to the theming of rampages: “I didn't want to offend anyone, I wanted to shake up and bring hope to the bullied in the classrooms. Make your tragedy a triumph, make your pain a recognized, well-paid art. Forgive those who treat you badly and your life will change from hell to heaven. "

Two titles refer to the rapper Kool Savas . These are Strassenrap is sexually aroused thanks to Kool Savas , in which Savas contributes the last lines of the piece, and The best day of my life so far . The background to this is that the album should first be released on Savas' label Optik Records and that Kaas wanted to emphasize the influence of Kool Savas on German hip-hop. Strassenrap is sexually aroused thanks to Kool Savas is about Kaas' journey from the South Pole, which takes him through Africa, Italy and Switzerland and ends in Berlin. He reports that he has new values for Deutschrap , such as respect for women and himself, in his “luggage”. At his destination in Berlin, Kaas administered “German rap, the medicine that is called love.” In the chorus, Kaas emphasizes that she stands for a new style within the German rap genre: “Street rap is cool, but slowly lame. Who is doing something new? I have no plan. Imagine a new rapper comes along and changes German rap like Savas. No problem guys, I'll do it. My name is… Kaas. "

The best day of my life so far is a reference to the album The Best Day of My Life , released in 2002 by Kool Savas. The idea for the addition "Until now" came from a joke from the Simpsons film . The best day of my life so far describes the transition from negative feelings to a more positive life. The lyrical ego deals with how it shakes off negative feelings after a troubled night in which it was burdened by fears about the future, "the strength returns" and happily begins perhaps the best day of its life so far. Kool Savas can also be heard in the background of the chorus.

In the piece About You / To You , Kaas deals with a past relationship. He tells how he met a woman who needed someone to whom she could confide her problems. Since he was suffering from frustration himself at the time, he entered into a relationship with her. Later on, Kaas reports how he realized that he was only with the woman out of pity. When he could decide to announce the breakup, she explained to him that she was pregnant. This led to the fact that he wanted to stand by the woman for the time being ("Kaas think about what you're going to do now. I decided to stay, to keep lying to her, I can still manage nine months, I already had twelve to practice. And anyway it is my baby that grows in her. If I had known what was happening, I would have been gone long ago. "). Kaas describes in the second stanza how he moved away from her while she talked badly of him and hoped for a continuation of the relationship. She finally made the decision to abort the child, which shocked Kaas ("I never said abort the baby! You wanted it, you said 'you lost' and disposed of behind my back.") And to its full Turning away from her resulted.

In Nonsense 09 , the lyrical self describes its dissatisfaction with its job. The job goes hand in hand with low pay ("Oh, how I hate [work]! And above all, I get just as much there as for doing nothing. How now, should that motivate me to do my duty?"). In addition, the narrator feels great hatred of his employer, who is described as arrogant and, in contrast to his workers, who have missed numerous opportunities in life, "lives his dream". The lyric self explains that it and its colleagues are mentally taking refuge in their own world; in his case, it's hip-hop culture. In the hook , the narrator longs for a beach in the Caribbean ("I want to get away from here and dream of the turquoise sea of the Caribbean. Feel the white sand under your feet, how warm the sun would be in the south now."). Non-Benefit 09 pays homage to the song Non-Benefit by the band Massive Töne . The chorus of the piece, which appeared on the album Kopfnicker in the mid-1990s, forms the textual conclusion of Non-Benefit 09 : "You can read it in my eyes. I wonder where the paths I'm going are going. Don't understand that, don't take it, I have nothing. I want to get out of the darkness and into the daylight. ”After Kaas' lecture, excerpts from an interview that the journalist Jörg Thadeusz conducted with the artist Markus Lüpertz in 2008 can be heard . In it Lüpertz explains that he sees himself as a “ genius ”, which he attributes to being an outsider. For him, positive self-esteem is the prerequisite for achieving “the best, most beautiful and greatest” in life.

In Das große Fest , the lyrical self dreams of a party that, apart from “Nazipack”, everyone can attend. The narrator portrays the celebration as a grand festival that, to the visitor, feels like the Washington Independence Day celebrations or the Rio Carnival . The focus of the festival is fun, which can also be achieved without drug consumption (“And you can feel an energy full of love and peace here in the room, even without ecstasy ”).

The piece Märchenwald is about Kaas' personal fairytale forest. Typical beings from fairy tales can be found in it. Kaas reports on talking animals, Snow White , dragons and Sleeping Beauty . Before children are poisoned with the “fear of an apprenticeship”, they still have fun with mythical creatures. Kaas therefore asks the listener to follow him into his fairytale forest. There it is possible to realize the miracles the listener dreams of.

Sam Cooke and so is a love song that depicts the lyrical self's affection for his girlfriend. The narrator reports that he led the life of a rapper, which involved high consumption of alcohol, drugs and sex with groupies . Although he was not interested in a steady girlfriend, he eventually fell in love with a girl who is only named "my baby" in the text. The girlfriend is characterized by a good taste in music - hence the title - and a positive influence on the lyrical self.

In Haruki , the lyric self tells the story of a former soldier who fled his homeland and lives with his daughter. His life is described as extremely difficult, and the contact with his daughter can make him happy. In the further course of the play, the lyrical self reports how it got to know the girl and was immediately taken with her. During a vacation together, the girl complains of a headache, which turns out to be a serious illness. The narrator pays her a few more visits before she dies in the hospital. Haruki's refrain and last verses highlight the grief of the father and the narrator: “All we want is to see her happy again. See them dance again, see them laugh again. But that's not possible, not yet, I hope. I hope God brings her back to him and to me. Holy Father help us! ” Haruki pays homage to the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami , whose stories are written in a fairytale-like style and often revolve around the loss of loved ones.

The song Für Uwe is aimed at a deceased friend of the artist who is addressed directly in the text. One day, after its own death, the lyric self will see the friend again in heaven. At the end of the piece, Kaas quotes two sentences taken from the film American Beauty : “When death meets you, it is as if God is looking directly at you. Just for a second and if you are careful you can return the look and then you will see beauty. "

Wonderful world should convey to the listener the view of the lyrical self on nature and life. It depicts aspects of nature such as the stars and the sea, freedom as well as friendship and love as beautiful. It also appeals to the listener to change their behavior and to improve the negative facets of the world through love, courage and tolerance.

The final bonus song Spirits of Love is about supernatural, invisible beings who protect the listener. The spirits also bring love, hope, health, prosperity and, after a happy, long life, ultimately death. In the hook is described as the spirits during Ouija noticeable: "Put your finger on the glass, it moves by itself. First it goes to the L, then to the I, the E, the B, the E. They are the spirits of love! "The album closes with the words spoken by Kaas:" And when it was all over, the king stopped and his entourage laughing their bellies. "

Music and singing

Kaas mainly uses spoken chant for the presentation of his texts , which is laid out as melodic rap . In the refrains of some songs, such as Nichtnutz 09 , Wunderschöne Welt and Lovemovement Anthem , Kaas also uses melodic singing, which alternates with the rapped verses. The title Sam Cooke and so can be emphasized, as the musician only sings on this piece, so that this song can be described more as a hit ballad than a pure hip-hop piece. In some cases, the vocoder technique was used to manipulate the rapper's voice , as in the song Das große Fest , for which a few lines were distorted so that a robot-like voice resulted. The voice recordings of the piece Für Uwe were also processed with the Antares Auto-Tune program . This is used for automatic pitch correction, which, similar to the use of the vocoder, leads to an unnatural sound of the voice.

Kaas performs his lyrics on hip-hop beats that were recorded without live instruments. The musician Tua from Reutlingen mainly worked on the beats and melodies of the songs. Tua is known for melancholy melodies in the productions of his own albums and created beats for Kaas' album that convey a happy mood and are thus adapted to the rapper's positive themes. Tua was responsible for the background music for Lovemovement Anthem , Über Sie / An Dich , The best day of my life so far , The great festival , Märchenwald , Sam Cooke and so on , For Uwe and the wonderful world . Furthermore, Strassenrap is sexually aroused thanks to Kool Savas , Nichtnutz 09 and Haruki and, together with Tua, About Sie / An Dich by Christyle. The singer Vasee was also involved in the creation of the song Amok Nachtrag . The beat and melody of the bonus title Spirits of Love were produced by Niko Papadopoulos. The song Running Up That Hill by singer Kate Bush was sampled for The Best Day of My Life So Far ; The stylistic device of scratching , which is often used in hip-hop, is also used in the song. After the recordings, Tua also mixed the album. After completion of the production, the audio post-processing, the so-called mastering , was carried out by Jens Baumgart in the Stuttgart i / O TonStudio.

layout

Cover of the original version of the album Amokzahltag: D

The cover was designed by Kaas together with Daniel W. This depicts the upper body of a woman with the head of a unicorn . With a knife, the figure cuts open the artery of the right hand. Blood oozes from the wound and is painted in rainbow colors. With the cover, the rapper wanted to show that “something good emerges from something bad”, which also applies the concept of the album to the external presentation. Kaas uses the fabulous unicorn for its logo. In the TAFKAAZ: D booklet , the importance of the animal is emphasized:

“The unicorn is mainly a symbol of white, light magic. His character is considered wise, kind, lovable and pure and his actions are always noble and thoughtful. It always opposes the bad with gentleness and wisdom. Therefore it is also a symbol for the strength of one's own body, the wisdom of the spirit, the love and goodness of the heart. "

Kaas' ambition is to create a positive feeling in the listener with his music, to convey a positive message to people and to inspire them to deal with their imaginations. The unicorn is the best symbol for these goals. He also sees himself as Michael Ende des Raps, who also used the unicorn for his logo.

marketing

Videos

Videos were made for four tracks on the album. From the original version of the album, the song Amok Payday was first implemented as a video. For this, the theme of the rampage was visually implemented, for example by using some excerpts from the diploma film Amok by Peter Lenkeit. After the real rampage in Winnenden, the video by Chimperator Productions was removed from the Internet. The video was also deleted by editors and operators of various video portals at the request of the Stuttgart label.

Another video was shot for Beautiful World . In addition to photographs of Kaas, excerpts from cartoons such as The Last Unicorn can be seen here. In September 2009 a clip of Sam Cooke and such followed . The video, in which the members of the group Die Orsons play, was directed by the singer Vasee.

About a year after the publication of TAFKAAZ: D , the fourth song was implemented as a video with Nichtnutz 09 . This was shot under the direction of Zoltan Zem. Kaas explained that he wanted to shoot a video for Nonsense 09 when the album was released , as the piece was very important to him and reflected a side of the album that had not previously been noticed by the public.

In addition to the regular videos for the album, a clip on Amok addendum was filmed as part of the series Halt die Fresse on the Aggro.tv website . The recordings were made in the offices of the Stoprocent internet shop .

Exclusive songs

Massif (right) with Kaas

Kaas made two songs exclusively available to hip-hop magazine Juice in 2009 as part of the marketing of the album . Already in the March issue of Juice was the piece of pats on the enclosed Juice find CD. The song was produced by Tua and was described by the magazine's editorial team as a "hit ballade". In the June issue of Juice , the song Space Invaders was named Juice Exclusive! released. The production of the piece was contributed by Peerless & The International. At the beginning of May 2009, the piece Oma auf der Schaukel was published on Rap.de. With What comes then appeared another free title after the album release on the website Hiphop.de.

In mid-May 2009 Kaas met with the Berlin rapper Massiv to record the song Exclusive Interview 09 with him . In this, the two rappers react to the controversies that have arisen in the media through their people. Massiv, who had been discussed in the press through violent assaults on his person during two concerts and an attack with a firearm on him, and Kaas, who had been linked to the Winnenden rampage, criticize hers in their joint piece View of unobjective reporting by tabloid journalism. Exclusive interview 09 was produced by Peerlees & The Internationals and made available on the website of the Chimperator Productions label . The title of the song refers to the piece Exklusivinterview , which was recorded in 1999 by the hip-hop musicians Max Herre and Afrob and is thematically similar.

On Christmas Eve 2010, Chimperator Productions made 54 songs from various releases of the label available free of charge for three days. From TAFKAAZ: D the pieces Haruki , Nichtnutz 09 and Über Sie / An Dich were represented.

tour

After the publication of Amokzahltag: D had been postponed indefinitely due to the Winnenden killing spree, those responsible at the Chimperator Productions label initially thought about canceling Kaas' planned tour. In a statement, the label said it had decided to go on tour because it was important not to hide after the Winnenden events. Kaas' music, which is positive and can bring hope to the listener, should speak for itself during the concerts. On March 20, 2009 Kaas started the tour under the title : D-Tour with a concert in Munich. After 14 dates, the tour ended on April 26, 2009 in Heidenheim; 200 to 300 spectators came to each performance. At the concerts, the rapper was accompanied by musicians Tua and Kodimey . A trailer was created in advance to advertise the tour.

reception

Charts

TAFKAAZ: D reached number 100 in the German album charts. After a week in the charts, the publication got out again.

Musical criticism

After the strong media response to the video Amokzahltag , only a few reviews appeared about the actual album release, in which the musical aspects are highlighted. The reception was largely limited to reviews from media mainly concerned with hip-hop, as well as some music journalists.

TAFKAAZ: D received three out of five possible evaluation points from the editorial team of the Laut.de website . Dani Fromm describes the music in the review she wrote as "colorful madness". Kaas does not construct complicated rhymes and does not convince with texts that are presented particularly quickly. In addition, the listener must like the "quacky" voice. However, the message of the musician brings "edification and plenty of fresh air". It is true that the "with all violence positive view" straddles the pain threshold of some listeners, but through consistent application it actually leads to a better world.

Kaas' debut album was discussed in the German hip-hop magazine Juice before the release and thus also before the songs were changed and the album was renamed from Amokzahltag: D to TAFKAAZ: D. In the criticism, the publication was awarded four and a half of a possible six "crowns". The album follows the rapper's biography, which "begins in the depths of the depression and, via a spiritual awakening experience, leads to a completely changed, consistently positive attitude towards oneself, people and the world." The title Amok payday , in which Kaas one Describes the rampage from the first-person perspective, appears frighteningly understandable in the lecture. After other titles that deal with problems with conditions at work and unwanted pregnancies, the mood of the album changes from the track The best day of my life so far to the positive. In summary, the editor of Juice describes the album Amokzahltag: D as "musically varied" and "rap technically successful." Already because of the depth of content and ambivalence, the work is worth listening to.

Marco Gaglio wrote a review for the website Rap.de, in which he declared that TAFKAAZ: D was “very happy and not really much to complain about”. The album offers everything that the listener can expect from an album. Gaglio praises the profound songs Über Sie / An Dich and Haruki in particular . In contrast, Sam Cooke and so have "disgustingly good catchy character", but it is a matter of taste. The editor made negative comments about the short playing time.

According to a review by the Meinrap.de website, Kaas, with its thematic focus on love, is in stark contrast to the majority of the German rap scene. The album has a positive mood, in which the serious songs Nichtnutz 09 , Haruki and Über Sie / An Dich bring variety. For Uwe , the content is touching, but the use of voice distortion makes it "a matter of taste." The editor finds friendly words for the beats that perfectly match the rapper's positive messages. In summary, TAFKAAZ: D gave the reviewer the feeling of having heard “something completely new”.
