Laura Robson (born January 21, 1994 in Melbourne , Australia ) is a British tennis player . Among other things, she won the Wimbledon junior women's tournament in 2008 as a 14-year-old .

Career

At the age of six, their parents enrolled in a tennis club where they lived.

2008-2011

From 2008 she took part in several ITF tournaments. She won her first professional tournament in her first season at Sunderland . In Wimbledon she was able to win the junior women competition with a final victory (6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 1) over Noppawan Lertcheewakarn from Thailand. She was the first British woman since Annabel Croft won the title in 1984 to win a Wimbledon individual again.

In 2009 Robson received a wildcard for the women's competition in Wimbledon , where she had to admit defeat to Daniela Hantuchová 6: 3, 4: 6 and 2: 6 in the first round . It was her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament .

When she first took part in the Hopman Cup in 2010, she played with Andy Murray for Great Britain. They reached the final, which they lost 2-1 to Spain.

In 2010 Robson received a wildcard for qualifying for the Australian Open ; she lost her second round match against Michaëlla Krajicek from the Netherlands 4-6 and 6-7 7 . With her partner Sally Peers , she also received a wildcard for the main draw in doubles . The duo was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the pairing Marija Kirilenko and Agnieszka Radwańska 4-6, 1-6. In the juniors she played her way up to the final, where she was defeated by number 6 seeded Karolína Plíšková from the Czech Republic with 1: 6 and 6: 7 5 .

For Wimbledon , Robson received a wildcard in 2011 for both singles and doubles with partner Anne Keothavong . In the individual she reached the second round after beating Angelique Kerber, who was almost 200 places better in the world rankings , where she was defeated by number 5 Marija Sharapova in two sets.

2012-2015

At the Olympic Games in London , she and her partner Andy Murray received a wildcard for the mixed competition. Only in the final they had to admit defeat to Wiktoryja Asaranka and Max Mirny in the match tiebreak with 6: 2, 3: 6, [8:10]. This won them the silver medal for Great Britain.

At the US Open , Robson moved into the round of 16 with a three-set win over number eight in the world, Li Na . There defending champion Samantha Stosur proved to be the stronger at 4-6 and 4-6. At the WTA tournament in Guangzhou , Robson advanced to the final, which she lost in a close match against Hsieh Su-wei 3: 6, 7: 5 and 4: 6.

After she had already reached the third round in Melbourne in 2013 , she moved into the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time at Wimbledon. There she lost to Kaia Kanepi 6: 7, 5: 7. The sum of the prize money she won exceeded one million US dollars. In addition, she achieved new records in the world rankings in both singles and doubles.

In 2014 she played first at the Hopman Cup and then at the Australian Open , where she gave up in the first round against Yanina Wickmayer in the second set when the score was 6: 4, 0: 2. She then had to undergo wrist surgery and was out for the rest of the season.

At the WTA tournament in Eastbourne she made her comeback after 17 months; they lost their first qualifying match 0-6 and 1-6. It was no longer listed in the world rankings. At Wimbledon in 2015, she competed in both singles and doubles , and has already lost her first round match.

Robson has not been in the world rankings since the end of May 2019.
