Kaia Kanepi (born June 10, 1985 in Haapsalu ) is an Estonian tennis player .

Career

Kaia Kanepi, who started playing tennis at the age of eight, benefits most from her powerful baseline game . Their preferred terrain is the clay court . As a junior, she won six individual titles on the ITF Women's Circuit . She was number one in the world before moving to professional life in 2000.

At the French Open 2006 Kanepi was in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and immediately moved into the second round. In the same year she reached in Hasselt out of the qualification and as the first tennis player in Estonia ever the final of a WTA tournament, in which she had to admit defeat Kim Clijsters in three sets.

The next leap in performance followed in 2008 when she advanced to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open , where she was able to record her first of a total of eleven successes against top 10 players with her victory over Anna Tschakwetadze . In the same year she reached her second WTA final in Tokyo , where she lost to Caroline Wozniacki . In 2008 she was voted Sportswoman of the Year in her Estonian homeland . Despite sporadic good results, Kanepi found it difficult to consistently call up her performance potential. After a mixed season in 2009 she drew attention again in 2010 when she moved out of qualification and without losing a set in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon , where she was defeated in a closely contested match by Petra Kvitová . A little later, on her third attempt, she won her first WTA title in Palermo in the final against Flavia Pennetta and thus became the first first woman to succeed in winning a WTA tournament. At the following US Open , she confirmed her ascending condition with another jump into the round of eight.

But even in 2011, Kanepi failed to match the good results of the previous season, also due to minor injury problems, and fell back in the world rankings. Only at the end of the year did I get back to the finals at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, but lost there against Dominika Cibulková . Kanepi preserved her good form over the subsequent break of the season and won her second individual title in Brisbane in January 2012 , followed by the triumph in Oeiras against Carla Suárez Navarro and her second place in the quarter-finals of the French Open in May . Due to an injury to the Achilles tendon, she had to cancel participation in Wimbledon and the Summer Olympics in London. Nevertheless, she reached her highest position in the world rankings with number 15 in August and when she returned to the tour in September she immediately reached the final in Seoul , but there was no chance against Caroline Wozniacki.

In 2013, she was only able to return to the WTA tour in April due to persistent problems with the Achilles tendon. Nevertheless, after a two-sentence win over Peng Shuai , she was able to win her fourth and so far last WTA title in Brussels and then another quarter-finals at Wimbledon . Over the next three years, the Estonian, plagued by plantar fasciitis in both feet and a protracted illness from glandular glandular fever , continuously fell back in the world rankings and even ended the 2016 season outside the top 300.

After making her comeback on the ITF tour in June 2017 after a one-year injury break, she made it to the quarter-finals as a qualifier at the US Open . The following season, she surprised again in New York when she eliminated world number one Simona Halep in two sets in the first round , before losing to Serena Williams in the fourth round . At the French Open 2019 , she was in the second week of a Grand Slam tournament for the last time. No longer able to play a full tournament calendar, she ended the season just outside the top 100.

For the Estonian Fed Cup team she has played 56 games since 2000, of which she won 41 (double balance: 13: 4).
