Flavia Pennetta (born February 25, 1982 in Brindisi , Apulia ) is a former Italian tennis player .

Career

Flavia Pennetta, who preferred hard courts for her game, began playing tennis at the age of five.

On August 17th, 2009 she was 10th (individual) as the first Italian woman in the top ten of the WTA world rankings . She reached her highest position with rank 6 on September 28, 2015 after her US Open victory. In 2011 she even became the first Italian number 1 in the tennis world in doubles.

In the doubles competition of the US Open in 2005 she reached the final with Jelena Dementjewa , in which the two Samantha Stosur and Lisa Raymond lost 2: 6, 7: 5 and 3: 6.

In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Pennetta went to Italy at the start. In the individual, she was eliminated in the first round against Kaia Kanepi . At the side of Francesca Schiavone , she reached the quarter-finals in doubles, where they lost 1: 6, 6: 3, 5: 7 against sisters Aljona and Kateryna Bondarenko from Ukraine.

In 2010 Pennetta won the WTA tournament in Marbella through her final victory over Carla Suárez . She lost the finals in Auckland and Palermo (both category: international) against Yanina Wickmayer and Kaia Kanepi in two sets. At the hard court tournament in Cincinnati (Premier 5) she was defeated in the semifinals to Kim Clijsters . Also at the tournaments in Paris and San Diego (both category Premier) came the end against Lucie Šafářová and Swetlana Kuznetsova each in the semifinals. At the French Open she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Caroline Wozniacki , in Wimbledon and at the US Open she reached the third round.

The year 2010 was much more successful for her in doubles. At the side of Gisela Dulko , she won seven WTA tournaments: Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, Bastad, Montreal, Moscow and the Masters in Doha.

In 2011 she and Dulko defeated the pairing Asaranka / Kirilenko in the final of the Australian Open with 2: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 1; so she was the first Italian player ever to win a title at this Grand Slam tournament . In Roland Garros, Pennetta / Dulko failed because of the later finalists Sania Mirza and Jelena Wesnina . At Wimbledon, Pennetta lost to Marion Bartoli in three sets in the third round . In Båstad , Sweden , she reached the quarter-finals ( seeded as number 2). At the tournament in Beijing she moved into the quarterfinals with victories over Peng Shuai , Daniela Hantuchová and Dominika Cibulková and also defeated the world number one Wozniacki in the tie-break of the third set. In the semifinals she then lost to Agnieszka Radwańska 2: 6, 4: 6.

In the 2012 season she remained without a title win. She had an operation and fell out of the top 100 due to the tournament break.

In 2013, it slowly increased again over the course of the season. The surprising entry into the semifinals of the US Open , in which she lost in two sets to Asaranka, was her greatest success in singles up to then. In doubles, she managed to win another tournament after a long time, with Kristina Mladenovic she won the WTA tournament in Osaka .

The Fed Cup won Pennetta with the Italian team in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013. In their quarter-final match against France in 2009 they however caused a scandal when they insulted the chair umpire during the second set and it even the middle finger pointing . She was given a warning and fined $ 2,000. Her defeated opponent Amélie Mauresmo described this as insufficient and demanded the cancellation of the match. Pennetta won in three sets, Mauresmo had missed her only match point with a double fault.

In 2014 Pennetta reached the quarter-finals in the singles for the first time at the Australian Open , in which she was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Li Na in two sets . The 32-year-old achieved one of her greatest successes in singles when she won the title in Indian Wells . There she defeated Li Na (semifinals) and Agnieszka Radwańska (final) in two sets and thus secured her tenth individual title on the WTA Tour . At the US Open she was also in the quarter-finals, where she had no chance against the eventual winner Serena Williams. Her entry into the finals in women's doubles with her new partner Martina Hingis was also remarkable. At the Premier 5 tournament in Wuhan they then won their first joint title and a few weeks later the tournament in Moscow . Nevertheless, they could not qualify for the WTA Championships. Instead, Pennetta received an invitation to the Tournament of Champions in Sofia, for which she had not qualified athletically. She even reached the final there, which she lost in three sets against Andrea Petković .

In March 2015, the prize money she won exceeded the $ 10 million mark. In September she won the US Open in an all-Italian final against Roberta Vinci . Immediately after winning her only single Grand Slam title, she declared her career over at the end of the season. On October 29, she played her last match on the tour at the WTA Championships in Singapore against Marija Sharapova , which she lost 5: 7 and 1: 6.
