Pamela "Pam" Howard Shriver (born July 4, 1962 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a former American tennis player .

Career

At the age of 16, she was in the women's final of the US Open in 1978 , after she had defeated Martina Navrátilová 7: 6 and 7: 6 in the semi-finals ; there she was defeated by Chris Evert 5: 7 and 4: 6. It was to be her only single Grand Slam final. In total, Pam Shriver was in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament nine times (US Open: 1978, 1982 and 1983; Australian Open: 1981 to 1983; Wimbledon: 1981, 1987 and 1988) and she won 20 individual titles on the WTA Tour . For most of the 1980s she was one of the ten best tennis players in the world. Her highest position in the individual world rankings was 3rd place.

One of her last great successes in singles was at the Masters in 1988, when she reached the final there and triumphed over Chris Evert in the quarter-finals and then in the semifinals over Steffi Graf .

In doubles, however, she was far more successful. She won 20 Grand Slam tournaments with Martina Navratilova (AUS Open: 1982 to 1985 and 1987 to 1989; French Open: 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988; Wimbledon: 1981 to 1984 and 1986; US Open: 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987), in 1984 even the Grand Slam in doubles. From April 1983 to July 1985, the Navratilova / Shriver team remained unbeaten 109 games in a row.

She won her 21st Grand Slam title at the US Open in 1991 with Natallja Swerawa . At the Olympic Games in 1988 she was also able to win the gold medal with Zina Garrison . In total, Pam Shriver won 106 double titles on the tour, 78 of them with Navratilova.

She won her only mixed Grand Slam title in 1987 at the French Open alongside Emilio Sánchez Vicario .

For the US Fed Cup team , she played 20 games; she conceded the only defeat in doubles, of all places, together with Chris Evert against Steffi Graf / Claudia Kohde-Kilsch in 1987, when the USA team lost the final in Vancouver against Germany 2-1.

In 1997 Pam Shriver resigned from professional tennis. She now works as a sports commentator for the BBC , ABC , CBS and ESPN .
