Kateřina Siniaková (born May 10, 1996 in Hradec Králové ) is a Czech tennis player and former world number one in women's doubles. Her greatest successes in 2018 were the triumph in the doubles competitions of the French Open and Wimbledon . In the same year she also won the Fed Cup with the Czech Republic .

family

Siniaková comes from a Russian-Czech family. Her father Dmitri Siniakov comes from Moscow, her mother Hana from Hradec Králové . Her father, who devoted himself to boxing in his youth , acts as his daughter's conditioning trainer. Siniaková graduated from the PSJG language high school in her hometown (besides Czech, she speaks English, German and Russian).

Career

Siniaková, who started playing tennis at the age of five, was an outstanding junior. In 2012 she won two important junior competitions with the Trofeo Bonfiglio and the Osaka Mayor's Cup and climbed to second place in the junior tennis world rankings. The following year she first reached the final at the Australian Open , which she lost to Ana Konjuh . In doubles, she won the junior title at the French Open , Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year together with Barbora Krejčíková .

In 2012 Siniaková gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first professional title there in 2013. She then made her debut on the WTA tour in Miami , where she started with a wildcard in qualifying . After two victories, she immediately made it into the first round of the main field, in which she failed in three sets against Garbiñe Muguruza . By the end of the year she had won two other $ 25,000 tournaments on the ITF tour.

In 2014 Siniaková competed for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open and was also able to advance into the main field straight away, where she was defeated by Sarina Dijas at the beginning . In Istanbul she won her first victory in the main round of a WTA tournament as a qualifier against Julia Glushko . Due to a strong season end spurt with reaching her first WTA semi-final at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, where she was only stopped by Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova , and the win at the $ 50,000 tournament in ITF Nantes , she was among the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time at the end of the year guided. After winning her first WTA title in Tashkent , Siniaková also made it into the top 100 in the world together with Aleksandra Krunić in doubles . In 2015 Siniaková was able to book her first main round victory in a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne after a first round success over Jelena Wesnina . She also won her second WTA double title at the side of Belinda Bencic in front of a home crowd in Prague . For the rest of the season, however, she fell short of expectations, especially in the singles, and fell out of the list of the best 100 players in the world.

In 2016 Siniaková won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Trnava and stormed into the semi-finals in the doubles competition at the subsequent French Open together with her junior partner Barbora Krejčíková. In addition, she came in the third round in the individual competition of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon and then reached her first two individual finals on the WTA tour, in which she was defeated in Båstad against Laura Siegemund and in Tokyo against Christina McHale . Nevertheless, she was among the top 50 in the world for the first time at the end of the season.

The following year, Siniaková was able to win her first two WTA individual titles at the start of the season in Shenzhen after beating Alison Riske in the final and in Båstad in July , where she again advanced to the final after the previous year. With Simona Halep and Johanna Konta in China and Caroline Wozniacki in the final in Sweden she beat three players from the top 10 in the world. Otherwise her individual performances were very changeable; in the individual competitions of all four Grand Slam tournaments, she was eliminated in the first round. The 2017 season was much more consistent in doubles, where she started with her compatriot Lucie Hradecká . The duo reached five finals, including the final in Indian Wells and the US Open , in which they each went as losers from the square.

In 2018 Siniaková achieved good results in both singles and doubles. She reached the final again in Shenzhen , but this time had to admit defeat to Simona Halep. In Paris , London and New York she was in the third round of the individual competition and thus underpinned her good form. By subsequently reaching the quarter-finals at the major Chinese tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing , where she was defeated by Anett Kontaveit and Caroline Wozniacki after qualifying, she achieved her best individual position in the world rankings in October with 31st place. In doubles, she teamed up again with Barbora Krejčíková, with whom she was able to celebrate great successes as a junior. After she lost her seventh double final in a row in Miami , she and her compatriot won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open after a smooth final victory over Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya , followed by the second at Wimbledon ; this time after defeating Nicole Melichar and Květa Peschke . On October 22nd, Siniaková became the 41st number one in the double world rankings in women's tennis and held this position for a total of 33 weeks until she was replaced by Kristina Mladenovic . Krejčíková and Siniaková lost to Mladenovic and her doubles partner Tímea Babos in the final of the WTA Championships 2018 in Singapore.

2019 was less successful for Siniaková in the individual. Her best result was the move into the fourth round at the French Open , where she defeated reigning world number one Naomi Osaka in two sets in the third round , before failing in the round of 16 at Madison Keys . She also reached the semifinals in Nuremberg and at the WTA tournament in the New York Bronx . In doubles, she first won alongside Aleksandra Krunić in Sydney , with Krejčíková together she was able to win two more titles in Toronto and Linz and was once again in the semi-finals at Wimbledon . At the WTA Championships 2019 in Shenzhen, the best eight teams were eliminated after only one win and two defeats in the group stage.

At the beginning of 2020, the two won the season opener in Shenzhen and reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open for the first time.

In 2017 Siniaková was called up for the first time in the Czech Fed Cup team for the quarter-final duel against Spain . In the smooth 3-0 victory of the Czechs in the final of the Fed Cup 2018 over the USA team , she won both individual games against Sofia Kenin and Alison Riske. In total, she has played ten matches in singles and doubles for her country so far, of which she has won five (individual balance 4: 2).
