Anett Kontaveit (born December 24, 1995 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian tennis player .

Career

Kontaveit, who started playing tennis at the age of six, was one of the best of her class even as a junior. In 2011 she won the prestigious Orange Bowl . The following year she reached the semi-finals at the junior women's competitions of the French Open and Wimbledon , and even the final at the US Open , in which she was defeated by Samantha Crawford . In the junior tennis world ranking, Kontaveit then achieved her highest world ranking position with fourth place. In 2013 she advanced to the round of the last four at the Australian Open .

In 2010 Kontaveit gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and in 2011 won her first three professional titles. In 2012 she played her first tournament on the WTA Tour in Copenhagen after receiving a wildcard for qualification from the organizers . In the following year, she was also given a wildcard, and was allowed to compete in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Miami for the first time, but had no chance there against Christina McHale . Back on the ITF tour, she won her first two titles in the $ 25,000 category in Moscow and at the end of the season in Margaret River . At the French Open 2014 , she first appeared in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but was eliminated in the final round. At Wimbledon she managed to move into the main field, but at the beginning she lost to Casey Dellacqua . Then she achieved her first major round success on the WTA Tour in Båstad against Alizé Cornet . Due to a disease of Pfeiffer's glandular fever , she had to end the season prematurely after a first round defeat in qualifying for the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

In 2015, Kontaveit was only able to pick up on its rising form from the previous year on grass. So she first won an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Eastbourne and then came to the semifinals in two other tournaments of the same category in Surbiton and Ilkley . As the player with the most wins of the season on the grass pitch, she then received a wildcard for the main round of Wimbledon , but she failed clearly at the start to Viktoria Asaranka . With a surprising move into the last 16 of the US Open , in which she was only stopped by Venus Williams , she moved into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time. The following year Kontaveit achieved their first two semi-finals on the WTA Tour in Monterrey and towards the end of the season in Guangzhou . In her four Grand Slam appearances, however, she was eliminated in the first round and therefore fell out of the top 100 again at the end of the season.

After a first round loss at the Australian Open 2017 , Kontaveit won her biggest title to date in Andrézieux-Bouthéon at an ITF tournament in the $ 60,000 category. She then qualified for the main draw in both Indian Wells and Miami , where she reached the second and third round. In Biel Kontaveit then advanced to her first final on the WTA Tour, in which she failed to Markéta Vondroušová , and was able to defeat a top 10 player with Garbiñe Muguruza for the first time in Stuttgart before she was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Marija Sharapova . Also in Rome she reached the round of the last eight after a second round success over the world number one Angelique Kerber ; there she lost to Simona Halep in straight sets. After beating Natalja Wichljanzewa in the final in 's-Hertogenbosch , she won her first WTA title on grass and made it into the third round for the first time at Wimbledon . In her subsequent second participation in the finals in Gstaad she was defeated by Kiki Bertens in three sets. Although she could only win two more matches by the end of the season, she ended the season in the top 50 of the ranking for the first time.

At the beginning of 2018 Kontaveit advanced to the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the first time and scored her third top 10 victory in the third round against Jeļena Ostapenko . At the start of the clay court season, she found her best form and reached the semifinals in Stuttgart and then in Rome after victories against Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki , in which she had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Elina Switolina . At the French Open she then reached the second round, but had no chance against Sloane Stephens . After mixed results on grass and hard court, she advanced to the final of a tournament in the premier category for the first time in Wuhan , which she lost to Aryna Sabalenka . Nevertheless, Kontaveit qualified for the first time in 2018 for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she was eliminated in the group stage after a win against Julia Görges and a loss to Elise Mertens .

After a mixed start to the 2019 season, Kontaveit first reached the fourth round in Indian Wells , in which she was beaten by Karolína Plíšková , and then the semi-finals in Miami , which she lost to Ashleigh Barty . In the following week, she achieved her highest world ranking position to date in 14th place. At the clay court tournament in Stuttgart , she benefited from Naomi Osaka 's short-term withdrawal and came to the final, which she lost to Petra Kvitová . After that, Kontaveit's performance, which made it into the third round in Wimbledon , Toronto and Cincinnati , stabilized at a solid level, even if there were no major successes in the further course of the year. For her third round game at the US Open against Belinda Bencic , she could not compete due to illness and then ended the season.

Recovered from the virus infection, she reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open after a clear success over Belinda Bencic, in which Simona Halep didn't give her a chance.

In 2011, Kontaveit made her debut for the Estonian Fed Cup team in the 4-1 playoff defeat against Spain at the age of 15 . Since then she has contested 43 matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 26 (individual balance 22: 7).
