Career

Sabalenka, who started playing tennis at the age of six, made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2012 . In 2015 she won her first professional titles, including one in a $ 25,000 tournament in Pune . The following year, she started in Rabat for the first time in the qualification of a tournament on the WTA Tour and was eliminated in the second round. After her biggest triumph to date at a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Tianjin , Sabalenka entered the US Open for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but also lost there in the second round. Towards the end of the season she reached the semifinals in an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in St. Petersburg and then won her second ITF title in the $ 50,000 category in Toyota .

At the beginning of 2017 Sabalenka qualified for a WTA tournament for the first time in Dubai , but at the beginning she lost to Kateryna Bondarenko . On grass, she then reached the semifinals at the ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Manchester , before she made it into the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . After a success over Irina Chromatschowa , she immediately moved into the second round, in which she was defeated by Carina Witthöft . By reaching her first WTA semi-final in Tashkent , Sabalenka climbed into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time . In the same year she played her first final on the women's tour in Tianjin , which she lost to Marija Sharapova . At the end of the season she won her biggest title to date at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Mumbai after a success in the final over Dalila Jakupović .

Sabalenka's international breakthrough followed in 2018. After a cautious start to the season with a third round in Indian Wells , she then reached her second WTA final on clay court in Lugano , in which she had to admit defeat to Elise Mertens . At the grass tournament in Eastbourne , she was able to beat Karolína Plíšková for the first time, a player from the top 10 in the ranking and, thanks to a success in the following match against Agnieszka Radwańska , she made it into the final of a premier tournament for the first time, in which, however, she was defeated by Caroline Wozniacki was defeated. In Montreal , Sabalenka prevailed against the Dane at the beginning of the American hard court season and reached the round of 16. Sabalenka then managed to reach the semi-finals in Cincinnati after two more top 10 victories over Plíšková and Caroline Garcia , in which she was eliminated by Simona Halep , before she in New Haven through successes over Julia Görges in the semifinals and a final victory against Carla Suárez Navarro finally celebrated her first WTA title. At the US Open she defeated Petra Kvitová in the third round the following week , making her first round of 16 in a Grand Slam tournament, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Naomi Osaka . Sabalenka was able to celebrate the biggest success of the season in Asia, where she won her first title at a Premier 5 tournament in Wuhan after beating Anett Kontaveit in the final , and then achieved another quarter-finals in Beijing . As world number eleventh, she qualified for the first time in 2018 for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, but retired after a win over Ashleigh Barty and a loss to Caroline Garcia in the preliminary round.

At the start of the 2019 season, Sabalenka prevailed against Alison Riske in the final in Shenzhen and won her third WTA title. After moving into the semi-finals in St. Petersburg , in which she was eliminated by Kiki Bertens , she achieved her highest world ranking position to date with ninth place. She also teamed up with Elise Mertens in doubles at the beginning of the year and triumphed at her side at the successive Premier Mandatory tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami . In the individual, however, Sabalenka's form flattened out, which until the start of the American hard court season could only reach a semi-final in Strasbourg and failed in Paris in the second, in Wimbledon already in the opening round, only once before it reached its second season finale in San José , but that she lost to Zheng Saisai . Sabalenka landed the greatest success of her career when she won her first Grand Slam title in the doubles competition at the US Open after beating Wiktoryja Asaranka and Ashleigh Barty in the final . Since the two had also reached the semi-finals at the French Open before that, Sabalenka climbed to second place in the WTA double world rankings. In Asia she was able to confirm her successes from the previous year in the individual and defended her title in Wuhan , where she again prevailed against Alsion Riske in the final. This enabled Sabalenka to qualify for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai for the second time in a row . After two wins in the group stage against Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens, she advanced to the semi-finals and beat Karolína Muchová there . She finally won the final against Kiki Bertens and ended the season in eleventh place as in the previous year. Together with Mertens, she took part in the double decision of the WTA Championships in Shenzhen for the first time at the end of the year . There, despite a win against Chan Hao-ching and Latisha Chan, the two did not get beyond the group stage due to two lost games against Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic as well as Anna-Lena Grönefeld and Demi Schuurs .

At the beginning of 2020 Sabalenka reached the semi-finals of Adelaide after beating Simona Halep , in which she had to admit defeat to Dajana Jastremska . After a first round elimination at the Australian Open , she reached the quarter-finals in Dubai and then celebrated her third triumph in a tournament in the Premier 5 category in Doha by winning the final over Petra Kvitová before the season had to be canceled due to corona .

In 2016 Sabalenka made her debut for the Belarusian Fed Cup team in the 3-2 playoff success against Russia . Since then, she has contested 21 matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win eleven (individual balance 10: 6).
