Julia Görges (born  November 2, 1988 in Bad Oldesloe ) is a German tennis player .

Career

She started playing tennis at the age of five at THC BW Bad Oldesloe. At the age of twelve she switched to THC Ahrensburg. As a teenager she was the national champion of Schleswig-Holstein (U 14) and as a 17-year-old national champion of women.

2005 to 2007 - beginnings in professional tennis

Görges has been in the WTA world rankings since 2005 . At first she played mainly ITF tournaments in Germany and was able to celebrate her first individual title in 2006 when she reached the finals in Wahlstedt. Görges was playing for TC Rot Weiß Wahlstedt at the time . Only a week later, the next title win followed at a tournament in Bielefeld. In the final of the tournament in Erding, she had to give up due to an injury. Her ascent began in March 2007 in Doha , where she first reached the main draw of a WTA tournament. With a wildcard for the qualification, she fought her way to the last sixteen, in which she was defeated by the world number five Svetlana Kuznetsova . It was her first game against a top ten player. More ITF tournament victories followed before Görges reached the semi-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in Stockholm in August 2007 . In the same month, she also made her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament . At the US Open , however, she already failed in round one with 0: 6, 3: 6 against world number one Justine Henin . At the end of 2007 Görges became German runner-up in Biberach; in the final she lost to Andrea Petković , against whom she lost in the semifinals of the German championships in Offenburg in 2009.

2008 to 2010 - rise in the world rankings

In 2010 Görges played for the first time in the main draw of all Grand Slam tournaments (picture US Open) .

At the beginning of 2008, Görges traveled to the tournaments in Australia, where she failed in the qualification. For the quarter-final against the USA she was nominated for the first time by Barbara Rittner for the German Fed Cup team . On her debut, however, she had no chance against Lindsay Davenport (1: 6, 2: 6). At the end of May 2008, Görges was in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. At her Wimbledon premiere, she was only five minutes short of setting the tournament record for the longest match in the history of women's competition. The first round game against Katarina Srebotnik lasted three hours and forty minutes , which Görges won with 4: 6, 7: 6 , 16:14. From the end of 2008 she trained with Sascha Nensel , who was also her official trainer from May 2009.

At the Australian Open in 2009 Görges was eliminated in the first round against Ana Ivanović . She also lost her opening match at Wimbledon and the US Open . She was able to celebrate a single title at the ITF tournament in Biarritz. In doubles, she was also successful on the WTA Tour in 2009 with several finals . She celebrated her first WTA title with Vladimíra Uhlířová in Portorož .

In 2010 Görges reached the second round of the Australian Open , in which she was eliminated by Caroline Wozniacki . This was followed by WTA tournaments in the USA, in which she did not get beyond the second round. Also at the French Open , she was eliminated in round two against world number one Serena Williams . At Wimbledon , she had to admit defeat to Marion Bartoli in the first round . At the ITF tournament in Biarritz, she was able to defend her title from the previous year and celebrate her first title of the season. She also won the doubles competition there with Sharon Fichman . On July 25, 2010 Görges secured her first WTA title in individual. With the two-set win against Timea Bacsinszky in Bad Gastein , she climbed to 42nd place in the WTA world rankings, making her the best-placed German player after Andrea Petković. After a defeat in the second round of the US Open against Yanina Wickmayer , she moved into the final of the WTA tournament in Luxembourg , where she lost 3: 6, 4: 6 against Roberta Vinci . Further tournament victories in doubles were achieved in 2010 at the WTA tournaments in Copenhagen with Anna-Lena Grönefeld and in Seoul with Polona Hercog as well as at the ITF tournament in Dubai. Görges finished her most successful professional year to date in 40th place in the single and 36th place in the double world rankings.

Görges at the US Open 2014

At the Fed Cup playoff against the USA in April 2011, Görges won both her singles against Melanie Oudin (6: 2, 7: 6, 5 ) and the doubles alongside Anna-Lena Grönefeld. With a smooth 5-0 victory, Germany rose again to the first world group.

Görges achieved her greatest success to date on April 24, 2011 when she won the WTA tournament in Stuttgart . In the final, she defeated the number one in the world rankings with Caroline Wozniacki after she had defeated a top ten player with Samantha Stosur in the semi-finals. In Madrid, where she was able to defeat Wozniacki again in three sets in round three, she reached another semi-final in which she was defeated by Wiktoryja Asaranka in two sets.

At the French Open, to which Görges traveled as number 18 in the world, she reached the third round for the first time with a three-set win over Lucie Šafářová , but lost her subsequent match against Marion Bartoli after a good start in three sets. In the doubles competition she moved to the side of Andrea Petković after a fought tiebreak in the decisive set in the round of 16, where the two of the pairing Nadja Petrowa / Anastassija Rodionowa were defeated in two sets. At Wimbledon, Görges started as 16th in the world rankings and easily reached the third round, in which she was defeated by Dominika Cibulková in three sets. In doubles, she failed with partner Marija Kirilenko, seeded in 9th position, already in round one. In Bad Gastein she had to accept a first round defeat as number 1 on the tableau, as she did later in Stanford (USA) against the 6th seeded Kirilenko. Also in San Diego , after a bye, the end followed in the opening match against Sloane Stephens (3: 6, 5: 7), who played her first season on the tour.

In January 2012 Julia Görges was able to celebrate her biggest single success so far at a Grand Slam tournament with her entry into the round of 16 at the Australian Open ; in the following two she reached the third round twice. At the French Open , she served the fastest serve of the season at 203 km / h. At the US Open , however, she failed in the first round to the qualifier Kristýna Plíšková . In doubles, she was eliminated from the Grand Slam tournaments once in the second round and twice in the first round. Only at the US Open did she make it to the quarter-finals. At the Australian Open , she made it to the second round in singles and in doubles. After early defeats, she dropped out of the top 100 on May 12, 2014. In July, she reached the double-finals in Stanford . In 2013 she was unable to book a single final. The Fed Cup, however, was more successful with two single and one double victories.

At the French Open she reached the final of the mixed competition with her partner Nenad Zimonjić , in which they had to admit defeat to the pairing Anna-Lena Grönefeld and Jean-Julien Rojer 6: 4, 2: 6, [7:10]. In 2014 she played two doubles at the side of Anna-Lena Grönefeld in the Fed Cup, both of which were lost. In addition, she and her partner Andrea Hlaváčková reached the double-finals of the WTA tournament in Québec in 2014 , in which they were defeated by Lucie Hradecká and Mirjana Lučić-Baroni in two sets.

In 2015, like 2012 and 2013, she was in the round of 16 of the Australian Open , in which she was defeated by Yekaterina Makarova 3: 6, 2: 6. At the French Open she reached the second round for the first time in her career; there she was eliminated with 2: 6, 2: 6 against Sara Errani . In the final, she defeated Coco Vandeweghe there in two sets. In the Fed Cup relegation against Ukraine , she won both of her appearances and thus made a decisive contribution to the 3-2 victory and remaining in the world group. In addition, she won the German team championship again in 2017 .

In 2018, in the final of the Auckland tournament, she beat world number three Caroline Wozniacki , whom she had defeated in the quarter-finals the previous year, and thus won her third tournament in a row.
