Jekaterina Valeryevna Makarova ( Russian Екатерина Валерьевна Макарова , English transcription Ekaterina Valeryevna Makarova ; born June 7, 1988 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian tennis player . Together with Jelena Wesnina , she won three Grand Slam titles and the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games .

Career

Makarova began playing tennis at the age of six, and has been on the professional tour since October 2004. At the beginning of 2008 it made it into the Top 100, in 2010 it was able to establish itself among the 50 best. She can boast victories over the former top 10 players Ai Sugiyama , Nicole Vaidišová , Wera Swonarewa , Anna Tschakwetadze , Nadja Petrowa , Amélie Mauresmo and Serena Williams . She has been playing for the Russian Fed Cup team since 2008 ; in this team competition she won all of her five doubles games and six of her eleven singles.

2010–2012

At the Eastbourne lawn tournament , she celebrated her first WTA title in 2010 . Starting the tournament as a qualifier, she first defeated Flavia Pennetta in the main draw 7: 6 5 , 6: 1 and in round two Nadja Petrowa 6: 2 and 6: 0. In the quarter-finals, she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6: 4, 7: 5 and in the semifinals Samantha Stosur 7: 6, 5 , 7: 5. She won the final against Wiktoryja Asaranka 7: 6 5 and 6: 4. This was the second time she finished the season in the top 50 .

Makarova made it to the round of 16 in both Melbourne and Paris. At the Australian Open she defeated Ana Ivanovic and Nadja Petrowa in 2011 before she had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Kim Clijsters . In Paris she was able to eliminate Kaia Kanepi , but this time lost to the later finalist Asaranka. At Wimbledon, she was eliminated in the first round, placed 28th. In February, she and Wera Duschewina played in the Paris final, in which the Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy won 6-4 , 6-2.

At the Australian Open she reached the quarter-finals in 2012, after victories over the number 7 and 12 seeded Wera Swonarewa and Serena Williams, in which Maria Sharapova had the upper hand with 6: 2 and 6: 3. At the French Open, Makarowa ended in round one against Sloane Stephens (4: 6, 6: 7). The grass season began with a semi-final in Birmingham (4-6, 6-3, 2-6 against Melanie Oudin ) and a quarter-final in Eastbourne against Angelique Kerber (2-6, 4-6). At Wimbledon it was only enough for round two, in which she met Kerber again and this time lost 5-7 and 3-6. At the US Open she was able to console herself for her elimination in the singles in round three with her first Grand Slam title; she won the mixed competition alongside the Brazilian Bruno Soares .

In October she won the WTA tournaments in Beijing and Moscow together with Jelena Wesnina . This improved her to 11th place in the double ranking.

Since 2013

In the doubles competition in Melbourne she reached the semifinals for the first time, so that she has been in the top ten in doubles since February 18, 2013. With her greatest success at the time, the double title at the only Grand Slam tournament on clay, she took fifth place in the double world rankings (in July she even took fourth place). In the final of the French Open , she and Wesnina defeated the defending champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci .

At the Australian Open she was in the final with Wesnina for the first time in 2014. However, Errani and Vinci managed to take revenge for Paris in three sentences. For the first time she moved into the quarterfinals in Wimbledon , which she lost to Lucie Šafářová in straight sets. At the US Open , she then reached the semi-finals in singles for the first time, in which she clearly lost out against Serena Williams . In the doubles competition, however, she won her second Grand Slam title with Wesnina.

At the Australian Open in 2015 Makarova was again in the individual semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. In April she reached 8th position in the WTA world rankings , a new personal record. In Roland Garros she reached the last sixteen in the singles; however, she was there in doubles in the semi-finals. At Wimbledon Makarova and Wesnina reached their second Grand Slam final, in which they had to admit defeat to Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza in three tight sets . In 2017 Makarova won the title together with Wesnina at Wimbledon , and they also won two more titles during the season. In the 2018 season, Makarova and Wesnina secured the title in Madrid and jointly took the lead in the world rankings on June 11, 2018 .

On January 28, 2020, she announced her retirement.
