Meghann Shaughnessy (born April 13, 1979 in Richmond , Virginia ) is a former American tennis player .

life and career

Meghann Shaughnessy has three siblings. Her uncle Dan Shaughnessy is a columnist for the Boston Globe and has written a book about the Boston Red Sox .

She started playing tennis at the age of seven. In April 1996 she joined the professional circus. In 1996 she was a finalist in the junior women’s tournament of the French Open . Serving was one of their strengths . In her prime, she was able to serve over 20 aces per match.

She had already won six ITF singles titles before celebrating her first win on the WTA Tour in Shanghai in 2000 . In 1998 she climbed into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time . In 2001 it was already among the 20 best in the world, in September it reached its highest position (11th place).

She won six WTA titles in singles . In Grand Slam tournaments she reached the semi-finals twice, in Paris in 2005 and in Melbourne in 2006 .

She played doubles even more successfully . With various partners she won 17 titles on the WTA Tour - in 2004 she won seven alongside Nadja Petrowa , with whom she also became double world champion in 2004.

From the beginning, Shaughnessy was trained and managed by Rafael Font de Mora , who was himself a professional tennis player. At the age of 14, Shaughnessy moved into his apartment, broke up with their divorced parents and dropped out of school. When the parents found out that the 17-year-old daughter was in a relationship with her considerably older coach, they were far from pleased. However, they did not want to go to court because they feared their daughter would isolate herself even more from them.

The relationship between Font de Mora and Shaughnessy, which was so close that he said he would even sell his tennis school in Tampa , Florida , to enable his protégé to play tennis even in less successful times, was officially declared over in 2002 . But a short time later Shaughnessy returned to him - and Font de Mora would only be her trainer.

Always struggling with her weight, Shaughnessy spent up to five hours a day in the gym, adding 20 pounds to her muscle mass . According to her own statement, she had a lot of fun training in the studio.

She was also the training partner of the German young talent Anna-Lena Grönefeld , with whom she worked in de Mora's tennis academy and also competed in tournaments. The two won their first joint title in September 2005 at the WTA tournament in Bali . Grönefeld was also said to have a relationship with Font de Mora.

From 2006 Shaughnessy was trained by the Australian Andrew Florent . She continued to play doubles with Grönefeld, with whom she won the Acapulco tournament and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2006. In singles, things didn't go so well in 2006 until the Acapulco tournament (only two wins): Shaughnessy suffered eleven first-round defeats in 13 tournaments. With her two tournament victories in Rabat and Forest Hills, however, she fought her way back among the 40 best in the world.

In May 2007 it was reported that Shaughnessy had returned to Font de Mora and that the two had married.

In the second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009 she had to sit out for a long time due to a knee injury (problems had occurred since the end of 2007). She then played eight WTA tournaments with moderate success, apart from her 16th double title, which she won at the side of Virginia Ruano Pascual in Warsaw. From 2010 she only competed in doubles. In February 2011 in Paris she secured her 17th and last WTA title together with Bethanie Mattek-Sands against Wera Duschewina and Jekaterina Makarowa . Since the Wimbledon tournament in 2011 , she has not competed in doubles either.
