Anna Smaschnowa ( Russian Анна Смашнова , born July 16, 1976 in Minsk , Soviet Union ) is a former Israeli tennis player .

Career

At the age of six, Smaschnowa, who preferred clay courts, began playing tennis. At the age of ten she was the number one Soviet junior woman. At the age of 14, she won the national junior championship in 1989.

In 1990 Freddy Krivine, the founder of the Israel Tennis Center, convinced the Smaschnowa family to emigrate to Israel. In 1991 Anna Smaschnowa won the French Open for Juniors in Paris. In 1995 and 1998 she reached the round of 16 there.

She won a total of 12 individual titles on the WTA Tour , and on February 3, 2003, she achieved her best ranking in the world rankings with rank 15 .

In 2007 Smaschnowa announced her retirement from professional tennis after the Wimbledon tournament .
