Catalina Castaño Álvarez (born July 7, 1979 in Pereira , Departamento de Risaralda ) is a former Colombian tennis player .

Career

Castaño, who started tennis at the age of ten, preferred clay courts.

From 2005 she defeated some top 20 players, including Nicole Vaidišová , Anna-Lena Grönefeld , Patty Schnyder , Paola Suárez and Li Na . On July 10, 2006, she achieved her best individual placement with position 35. From November 2006 she was the best-placed South American tennis player in the world rankings for a long time.

Castaño won her first title on the WTA Tour on July 22, 2012 with doubles partner Mariana Duque Mariño in Båstad . On February 17, 2013, at the age of 32, she won the Cali Challenger tournament , again with Duque Mariño at her side. On the same day, she missed her seventh ITF singles title when she had to admit defeat to Lara Arruabarrena Vecino in the final .

After the WTA tournament in Florianópolis , Castaño was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2014 . She then declared her tennis career over.

As of 1996, she has played no fewer than 74 games for the Colombian Fed Cup team . With a total of 51 wins she had a balance of 33:17 in singles and 18: 6 in doubles.
