history

The Orange Belt Railway, completed in 1888, once ran through Largo from Sanford to Saint Petersburg . After several takeovers, the line was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967.

Largo itself was mentioned from 1905. In 1913, it was the first municipality in Pinellas County to have its own city council as a local political body. The most important source of income was agriculture until the 1960s, before urban workers from surrounding regions increasingly used the city as a permanent place of residence, which is why it was often referred to as the “dormitory city”. From 1905 to 2005 the area of the city grew to around 44 square kilometers and the population from around 300 to more than 70,000 inhabitants. Largo maintains a twinning with the Japanese city of Kōchi (also called Kami ), an amalgamation of the former communities of Kahoku and Tosayamada in the eponymous prefecture of Kōchi in Japan .
