Dunedin ( dəˈniːdɪn ) is a city in Pinellas County in the US state of Florida with 35,321 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The name of the city is derived from the Scottish name of Edinburgh , Dùn Èideann .

geography

Dunedin is on a peninsula . The city is bordered by Clearwater to the south and east , the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the CDP Palm Harbor to the north . The offshore islands of Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island with their respective state parks also belong to the urban area . Dunedin is about 25 km west of Tampa .

history

The first known landowner in what is now Dunedin was Richard L. Garrison in 1852, but the settlement's first name was Jonesboro . In 1882, two merchants of Scottish descent got the US Postal Service to name the post office Dunedin. Eventually the city got this name. It was incorporated as a town in 1899 and as a city ​​in 1925 .

The Orange Belt Railway, completed in 1888, once ran through Dunedin from Sanford to Saint Petersburg . After several takeovers, the line was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967.

The city's early settlers lived from growing cotton and lemons . The city later developed into an important seaport , to which the building of a shipyard contributed. Most of Florida's sailing ships were once registered here. The Atlantic Coast Line Depot (the ACL was a legal successor to the Orange Belt Railway) on Main Street is now a museum that is run by the Dunedin Historical Society and displays artifacts from the city's history. The JO Douglas House and the Andrews Memorial Chapel were in the National Register of Historic Places entered.

The market research company ACNielsen has operated a data center here since 1972 and is one of the city's largest employers. The Professional Golfers Association was based here from 1945 to 1962.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 35,321 inhabitants were distributed over 21,113 households. The population density was 1313 inhabitants / km². 91.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 3.3% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 1.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 5.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 lived in 18.0% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 41.1% of all households. 52.7% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.98 people and the average family size was 2.63 people.

16.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 36.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 51 years. 46.4% of the population were male and 53.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 48,420, with 9.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 92.20% of the population, 3.12% spoke Spanish and 4.68% had another mother tongue.

Dunedin is crossed by US Highway 19 ( SR 595 ) and Florida State Roads 580 and 586 . The nearest airport is St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (15 km south).

education

There are six public schools in Dunedin, three of which are elementary schools ( Dunedin , Garrison-Jones , San Jose ), a middle school and a high school. There are also the Athenian Academy of Pinellas and the Academie Davinci as well as two private schools ( Anchor Academy and Dunedin Academy ) and a Roman Catholic school ( Our Lady of Lourdes ).

According to the census data, 86.6% of residents have a high school degree, 22.4% have a bachelor's degree, and 7.1% have a doctorate or an even higher degree.

The crime rate in 2010 was 253 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were 15 rapes, 19 robberies, 74 assaults, 208 break-ins, 915 thefts, 37 car thefts and six arson attacks.
