Summerside is a Canadian city in Prince County in the province of Prince Edward Island . It is the second largest city in the province and the administrative capital for the western part of the island. Summerside was officially designated a city on April 1, 1877, and again a city on April 1, 1995.
history
The area where Summerside is located has been inhabited by Mi'kmaq Indians for centuries . Until the early 1700s, only a few Arcadians settled (as the first settlers of European descent). The first permanent European settlement was built in 1840. At the same time a shipyard and a road were built to St. Eleanors, the then administrative seat of Prince County . An attempt to settle in Princetown had previously failed.
After a rail link was established in 1872 , the port of Summersides was connected by steamers to the mainland railroad at Shediac , New Brunswick . The port grew into an important transshipment point for all types of consumer goods and agricultural exports.
At the beginning of the 20th century the shipping industry got into a crisis and Summerside experienced a structural change to the fox fur trade. The city grew during the 1940s after the Royal Canadian Air Force established a flight school on the outskirts of the city. This base was closed in 1991 and rededicated as an industrial area. Federal and provincial governments and city councils took initiatives to diversify the regional economy . The reintegration coincided with the merger of Wilmot, St. Eleanors and Sherbrooke with the larger Summerside to form the new town in 1995.
For three years, Summerside was the home of the fictional character Anne Shirley from the novel series Anne on Green Gables by the Canadian Lucy Maud Montgomery .
geography
Summerside's waterfront is on the island's south coast, on the Northumberland Strait. The city is 28.36 km² and is located on the 4 km wide isthmus that separates the Northumberland Strait from Malpeque Bay, a basin of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence ; this is the lowest part of Prince Edward Island.
Economy
Major employers include the tax office, Atlantic Turbines, a manufacturer of wind turbines, Testori Americas, and Honeywell Engines and Systems. Summerside was once the world center of the silver fox industry, there is now a silver fox museum (see also the article → Silver fox fur ).
The town of Summerside has an electrical generator for power outages. Most of the province's electricity comes from the mainland.
administration
Basil Stewart, a former police officer, is the incumbent mayor of Summerside. He began his eighth consecutive term in November 2006 and has been in office for two decades.
Medical supplies
The city is home to the Prince County Hospital, which is the second largest in the province.
