Shediac is a city in Westmorland County ( New Brunswick ) in Canada . It has just under 6053 inhabitants (2011) and is located on Shediac Bay . The city bills itself as "Lobster Capital of the World" (world capital of lobster ), which also be expressed that at the western entrance, the world's largest sculpture welcomes visitors to the city of a lobster. In July of each year a festival is organized which also supports the lobster fishery. Fishing is an essential economic and tourist element in the region. Lobsters are caught using the lobster baskets used in Europe and North America . Boat and water sports, like other sports , are very important in the region. The wrestler René Goguen, who was born in Shediac, became internationally known .

The name “Shediac” is derived from the word “Es – ed – ei – ik”, coined by the Mi'kmaq , a North American Indian people , who lived here a few hundred years ago. The Arcadians settled the area in the 18th century. In 1872 a railway connection was established that connected the port of Summerside to the mainland railway at Shediac by steam ships. Today the Confederation Bridge connects the two provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, which reaches the mainland just over 50 kilometers from Shediac.

The city of Shediac is bilingual (English and French).
