Douglas "Doug" MacLean (born April 12, 1954 in Summerside , Prince Edward Island ) is a Canadian ice hockey official and coach.

Career

MacLean played in the OHA during his junior years with the Montréal Junior Canadiens , but failed to make a significant career as a player.

After coaching a university team, among other things, the St. Louis Blues hired him for the 1987/88 season as assistant coach to Jacques Martin . For the following season he moved to the Washington Capitals as assistant to Bryan Murray . When Murray was released during the 1989/90 season , MacLean was transferred to the AHL farm team for the Baltimore Skipjacks .

For the 1990/91 season Murray was signed by the Detroit Red Wings and MacLean followed him as an assistant. Even when MacLean first stepped into the spotlight, Murray pulled the strings behind the scenes. After Murray had hired the newly formed Florida Panthers as general manager and was looking for a successor to Roger Neilson for the team , the choice fell on Doug MacLean. He was able to convince in his first job as head coach. After his first season in 1995/96 he was nominated for the Jack Adams Award for best coach in the NHL, the following year he was a coach at the NHL All-Star Game .

His success and experience as a trainer with the Florida Panthers qualified him to become the first general manager of the newly founded Columbus Blue Jackets . After the desired success did not materialize in the third year either, he took over the position of coach himself during the 2002/03 season . For the 2003/04 season he got Gerard Gallant, an assistant coach who comes from the same place as him. After half a season, he handed over the reins to Gallant and fully concentrated on his managerial work. After the Blue Jackets had not qualified for the playoffs in the 2006/07 season , they separated on April 18, 2007 from him.

In August 2007, MacLean led a group of investors that wanted to take over Tampa Bay Lightning .
