Scott Howson (born April 9, 1960 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and official. From 2007 to 2013 he was General Manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League .

Career

Scott Howson began his career as a hockey player with the Kingston Canadians , for which he was active from 1978 to 1981 in the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey Association and its successor, the Ontario Hockey League . Then the attacker received on August 25, 1981 as a free agent a contract with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League .

First he ran in the 1981/82 season, however, for the Toledo Goaldiggers in the International Hockey League , with which he won the Turner Cup . As the best rookie , the Canadian received the Garry F. Longman Memorial Trophy , as he made a significant contribution to the success of his team in 83 games with a total of 139 points, including 67 goals. In parallel, he came to eight appearances for the Indianapolis Checkers from the Central Hockey League , for which he was exclusively on the ice from 1982 to 1984. In the summer of 1984, the New York Islanders called the right-shooter in their NHL team, for which he scored five goals in 18 games in the following two years and gave three assists. Most of the time, however, he spent in their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Springfield Indians . Following the 1985/86 season, he ended his active career at the age of just 26.

After retiring as a hockey player, Howson worked as general manager for the farm teams of the Edmonton Oilers from the American Hockey League , the Cape Breton Oilers and Hamilton Bulldogs . From 2002 to 2007 he was employed as an assistant GM on Edmonton's NHL team. Subsequently, on June 15, 2007, he accepted the post of General Manager at the Oilers' league rivals, the Columbus Blue Jackets . After only one play-off participation in 5 seasons, Howson was relieved of his duties as general manager of the franchise on February 12, 2013.
