The Indianapolis Checkers were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Indianapolis , Indiana . The Checkers' venue was the Pepsi Coliseum .

history

The Indianapolis Checkers were founded in 1979 as a franchise of the Central Hockey League , whose championship they won in 1982 and 1983, respectively. The Checkers filled the void left in the city by the dissolution of the Indianapolis Racers from the World Hockey Association in 1978. After the dissolution of the CHL after the 1983/84 season, the Indianapolis alternated Checkers in the International Hockey League , in which they participated for three years and were eliminated respectively in the first playoff round before the franchise in 1987 after Denver , Colorado resettled where it then took part in the IHL game operations under the name Colorado Rangers .
