The Market Square Arena was a multi-purpose hall in the US city of Indianapolis in the state of Indiana . The owner and operator of the arena was the city of Indianapolis until it was closed on October 24, 1999. The Market Square Arena was demolished on July 8, 2001. Controlled demolitions caused the building to collapse within 12 seconds.
History and use
The architect groups Kennedy, Brown & Associates and Fleck, Burkart, Shropshire, Boots, Reid & Associates and McGuire & Shook Corporation designed the building in 1970. The foundation stone for the arena was laid on October 20, 1971. The construction work lasted until September 15, 1974 and cost 23 million US dollars . The hall was constructed by Huber, Hunt & Nichols in cooperation with J. Robert Carlton & Associates. The arena was renovated in 1995. The Market Square arena was mainly used for basketball and ice hockey .
Concerts
Nationally and internationally known artists and bands performed in the hall; so played here u. a. Eric Clapton , KISS , Michael Jackson and Prince . Elvis Presley gave his last concert here on June 26, 1977.
