The Nashville South Stars were an American ice hockey franchise of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League based in Nashville , Tennessee .

history

The Nashville South Stars were founded in 1981 as the farm team of the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League . In their premier season, the 1981/82 season , the South Stars played in the Central Hockey League and were coached by former Canadian NHL player Gene Ubriaco . After the cooperation with the NHL team was ended, the Nashville South Stars moved to the Atlantic Coast Hockey League for the 1982/83 season . In this, they finished sixth and last place after the regular season in their first season. During the following season , the team was relocated to Vinton , Virginia , and changed its name to Virginia Lancers during the current season .

The void left in the city by the Nashville South Stars was filled by the Nashville Knights , who competed in the East Coast Hockey League from 1989 to 1996 .
