The Mohawk Valley Comets were an American ice hockey franchise of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League based in Utica , New York .

history

The franchise took on the 1981/82 season under the name Mohawk Valley Stars as one of seven founding members to play in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League . The team filled the void created by the end of the Utica Mohawks , who competed in the Eastern Hockey League from 1978 to 1980 . In their debut season, the Stars finished second after the regular season and eventually won the Bob Payne Trophy as ACHL champions in the playoffs . In the following years, the team always belonged to the midfield of the league and changed its name in 1985 based on a former franchise of the North American Hockey League from Utica in Mohawk Valley Comets.

After the Atlantic Coast Hockey League was dissolved following the 1986/87 season , the Mohawk Valley Comets also stopped playing. Professional ice hockey was finally continued in Utica from 1987 by the Utica Devils from the American Hockey League .
