The Kansas City Red Wings were an American ice hockey franchise of the Central Hockey League based in Kansas City , Missouri .

history

The Kansas City Red Wings began playing in the 1977/78 season in the Central Hockey League , in which they were the new farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League , after this cooperation with the Rhode Island Reds from American Hockey League ended. In Kansas City, the Red Wings filled the void left by the Kansas City Blues in 1977. In their premiere season, the Kansas City Red Wings missed the playoffs for the Adams Cup as fifth after the regular season. In the 1978/79 season they reached third place in the regular season and then failed in the first playoff round.

For the 1979/80 season Detroit founded a new AHL farm team named Adirondack Red Wings , whereupon the Kansas City Red Wings stopped playing after two years. It was not until 1990 that a team from the city resumed professional ice hockey with the Kansas City Blades from the International Hockey League .
