The Dayton Gems were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Dayton , Ohio . The Gems' venue was the Hara Arena .

history

The Dayton Gems were founded in 1964 as a franchise of the International Hockey League . In their second season, the team reached the final of the Turner Cup for the first time in the 1965/66 season , which they lost to the Port Huron Flags . The same happened to them two years later against the Muskegon Mohawks . In 1970 and 1971 Dayton was able to retaliate with his first two Turner Cup victories against these two teams. The Gems achieved their third and last success in the IHL in the 1975/76 season when they again prevailed against the Port Huron Flags in the Turner Cup final. Despite the sporting success, the team from Ohio, which was the first North American professional team to require its own players to wear helmets on the ice, temporarily stopped playing from 1977 to 1979. Although the Gems played again in the IHL in the 1979/80 season, the franchise was subsequently dissolved.
