The Hamilton Bulldogs were an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League . They played at the FirstOntario Center in Hamilton , Ontario , Canada from 1996 to 2015 .
history
The Hamilton Bulldogs were founded in 1996 as the successor to the Cape Breton Oilers and served as the Edmonton Oilers' farm team at that time . In 2002 they planned to move the team to Toronto , whereupon a local group of investors acquired the Citadelles de Québec from the Montréal Canadiens . As a result, the Bulldogs merged with the Citadelles, but continued to play in Hamilton, kept their name and were now active as the farm team of Edmonton Oilers and Montréal Canadiens at the same time. It wasn't until a year later that the Oilers officially moved their farm team to Toronto and formed the Toronto Roadrunners , while the Bulldogs continued to play in Hamilton and now cooperated exclusively with the Canadiens.
In their first year, the Bulldogs became the best preliminary round team and also reached the final of the Calder Cup . In the following years they were eliminated earlier and earlier in the play-offs and completely missed them in 2005/06 . The 2006/07 season saw the greatest success in franchise history, winning the Calder Cup. The team around Corey Locke , Dan Jancevski and Carey Price (who became MVP of the play-offs ) beat last year's winner, the Hershey Bears , 4-1 in the final round.
In 2015 Michael Andlauer sold the majority of the Bulldogs he had acquired in 2004 to the Canadiens, who then announced that they would relocate the franchise to St. John's in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador . There, as part of a major restructuring of the AHL , they took over the identity of the St. John's IceCaps, which were located there from 2011 to 2015, and formed a new team under the same name . In addition, Michael Andlauer bought the Belleville Bulls from the Ontario Hockey League and moved to Hamilton, where they will operate again as Hamilton Bulldogs at the beginning of the 2015/16 season .
