He won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 1996 . In the 2003/04 season he let his career at SC Bern end, where he became Swiss champions with the team . Lefebvre then worked as the Avalanche's assistant coach before he was head coach of the Canadiens de Montréal farm teams in the American Hockey League from 2012 to 2018 . Since summer 2018 he has been employed again as an assistant coach for the San Diego Gulls in the AHL.
Career
Player career
In his youth, Lefebvre played for the Laval Titan from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In 1986 the Canadiens de Montréal offered the defender his first professional contract, but for the next three years he only played with the Canadiens' farm team , the Canadiens de Sherbrooke , in the American Hockey League . Lefebvre finally made his debut in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 1989/90 season . He is one of the few players who did not get into the professional league through the NHL Entry Draft , but was offered a contract directly.
After three years with the Habs , the player was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs on August 20, 1992 in exchange for a third-round draft pick for the 1994 NHL Entry Draft . There he completed two seasons before he was given on June 28, 1994 in an exchange to the Nordiques de Québec . Strikers Wendel Clark and Landon Wilson went to Québec with Lefebvre . The Maple Leafs got Garth Butcher , Todd Warriner and the young Mats Sundin in return . In addition, both teams exchanged their respective first-round draft picks for the NHL Entry Draft in 1994.
Sylvain Lefebvre completed a total of five seasons for the Nordiques de Québec / Colorado Avalanche organization, where he won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 . In the 1997/98 season he was team captain for 18 games , as Joe Sakic was out due to an injury. At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , Lefebvre signed a four-year contract with the New York Rangers . However, his performance sank rapidly and so it came about that he was sent for several weeks to the Rangers farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack from the AHL, during the 2001/02 season . After another year in New York , his contract expired and was not renewed. He then left the NHL and joined SC Bern for a year before saying goodbye to active sports and ending his career.
Coaching career
His first coaching position was that of assistant coach at the beginning of the 2007-08 season with the Lake Erie Monsters , the farm team of the Colorado Avalanche. After coaching the Monsters in the AHL for two years, he was appointed to the Avs coaching staff as assistant coach to Joe Sacco on June 4, 2009 . After three years as assistant coach with the Avalanche, Lefebvre took a position as head coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs . He kept this when the team was relocated to St. John's in 2015 and to Laval in 2017 . After the 2017/18 season, which he ended with the Rocket as the worst team in the AHL, he was sacked. Since summer 2018 he has been employed again as an assistant coach for the San Diego Gulls in the AHL.
