Jason Ward (born January 16, 1979 in Chapleau , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who last played in the Austrian ice hockey league at EHC Linz .
Career
Ward began his career in the Ontario Hockey League , Canada's highest junior league, and made his professional debut in the American Hockey League in the 1997/98 season . In 1997, he was drawn eleventh in the NHL Entry Draft . In total, he completed 348 games in the NHL , most of them for the Canadiens de Montréal . In the 2006/07 season he was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Sean Avery from the New York Rangers . His last games he completed after another change at the Tampa Bay Lightning . In 2009 and 2010, however, he was only used in the AHL. In the spring of 2010, he finally ended his active career due to a lack of contract offers and in the meantime worked as an assistant coach of the Brampton Battalion in the OHL, before the Austrian first division club EHC Linz brought him back from early retirement to replace the disappointing Eric Healey . After 35 games with the Black Wings by the end of the 2010/11 season , Ward returned to the Brampton Battalion in the Ontario Hockey League, where he has since acted again as an assistant coach.
International
Ward represented his home country at the 1998 Junior World Championship and the 1999 U20 World Junior Championship . In the course of the two tournaments he completed a total of 14 games and scored three points. At the U20 Junior World Championship in 1999, the winger lost in the final with Canada against Russia and won the silver medal.
