Giovanni Patricolo (born August 16, 1789 in Palermo , † March 17, 1861 ibid) was an Italian painter of classicism in Sicily .

Life

Born as the son of the architect Giuseppe Patricola, who worked for King Ferdinand IV , Giovanni Patricolo received artistic support from his father at an early stage and received initial training from Giuseppe Velasco .

But he initially decided to pursue a career in the church, and in 1813 he was ordained a priest.

After a visit to the workshops of Vincenzo Riolo and Giuseppe Patania , he turned back to painting and gave up his priesthood. After restoration work on two paintings by Pietro Novelli , he appropriated his light and dark painting, from which he developed his own style, in addition to the influences of his teachers, which is somewhere between classicism and early romanticism.

He was buried in the Church of San Domenico. In the Cappella Oneto he is remembered by an inscription.

One of his students was Domenico Costantino .
