Domenico Costantino (born October 20, 1840 in Palermo , † August 11, 1915 in Palermo) was an Italian sculptor.

Life

The sculptor's family lived in Via Vetriera in the Kalsa district of Palermo. He was a student of the sculptors Gaetano Geraci and Valerio Villareale , from whom he got his first impressions of the classicist style. In 1854 he took drawing lessons from Giovanni Patricolo and after 1860 worked in his own workshop in the courtyard of Gancia . He undertook two study trips to Rome and Florence , on which he dealt with the new naturalistic direction. Here he met Giovanni Dupré , whose style inspired him very much. He was also very interested in the simple arts, especially Sicilian ceramics .

Domenico Costantino created the sculptures by Carlo Cottone , principe di Castelnuovo, on the Piazza Castelnuovo and by Ruggero Settimo and Emerico Amari in the Pantheon of San Domenico , as well as the four eagles of the Palazzo Pretorio in Palermo. He also made numerous tombstones and portraits of mostly noble Palermitans and other naturalistic sculptural representations. He was the teacher of Domenico Trentacoste , Giuseppe Inghilleri and Salvatore Profeta .

A street in Palermo is named after him.
