The first Dominican church from the 13th century in Gothic style was followed by a Renaissance building from 1458 to 1480, which was renovated between 1637 and 1640 by the Dominican priest and architect Andrea Cirrincione. The two-towered Baroque facade from 1726 is decorated with statues of Saint Dominicans ( Thomas Aquinas (around 1225–1274), above it Saint Dominic (around 1170–1222) and Dominican Popes Innocent V (1276), Pius V (1266–1272 ), Benedict XI. (1303–1304) and Benedict XIII. (1724–1730)) as well as with Peter , which come from Giovan Maria Serpotta , the great-grandson of Giacomo Serpotta .

The three-aisled interior in the form of a Latin cross, divided by 16 columns, is the largest church space in Sicily with 88.92 × 34.68 m . The altar houses the relics of the Palermitan saint Dominican Pietro Geremia . Since 1853, thanks to the writer Agostino Gallo as the Pantheon , the church has been the burial place of famous Sicilians. So here are Michele and Emerico Amari , Francesco Crispi , and the painter Pietro Novelli and Giuseppe Velasco buried.

There are numerous important sculptures and paintings in the church.

The monumental choir stalls from the 18th century behind the altar were made from walnut according to plans by the Dominican Giovanni Battista Ondars and the rococo organ was built in 1781.
