Giacomo Serpotta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giacomo Serpotta (* 10. March 1656 in Palermo ; † 26. February 1732 in Palermo) was an Italian sculptor and stucco of the Baroque . He was the most important member of the Serpotta family of sculptors in Palermo. He often worked together with his brother Giuseppe (* 1653; † 1719) and their son Procopio (* 1679; † 1755).

Life

Nothing is known about his training, he probably received the first instructions together with his brother in the workshop of his father Gaspare Serpotta († 1669). Most of his biographers assume that he trained his other sculptural skills in Rome , as his sculptures stylistically reflect the zeitgeist of the Roman sculpture school around Gian Lorenzo Bernini . He developed his main activity in Palermo, where his work is documented from 1678.

Of his sculptural work, eight allegorical statues from 1726/28 in the church of San Francesco d'Assisi and figures of saints in the church of Sant'Agostino have been preserved. Serpotta bases his real fame on mostly monochrome stucco marble work , which can be found in numerous churches and oratories in Sicily . The best known are his stucco decorations in the Oratorio di San Lorenzo, the Oratorio di Santa Cita and the Oratorio del Rosario in Palermo. The design of the wall decoration with figural reliefs that frame his free figures is typical of his way of working .
