Sant'Agostino (Palermo)
Sant'Agostino is a church of the Augustinian Hermits in Palermo . It is located near the Teatro Massimo , in the Capo district, Via Sant'Agostino is part of the Mercato del Capo.
The elongated, single-nave building was built under the rule of the Anjou at the end of the 13th century in the Gothic style . The facade with a richly decorated portal and large rose window dates from the 14th century. The noble families Chiaramonte and Sclafani were among the sponsors .
At the end of the 15th century, Giuliano Mancino and his colleague Bartolomeo Berrettaro created the side portal decorated with depictions of Saint Augustinians.
The interior of the church was redesigned in 1711 and 1729 by Giacomo Serpotta with stucco work in the Baroque style.
The cloister from 1560 is attributed to Vincenzo Gaggini
Since 1922 , the feast of St. Rita of Cascia has been celebrated in Sant'Agostino with great effort and a large number of believers.
