Zermatt marathon
The Zermatt Marathon (since 2014 Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon ) is a marathon that has been held in Zermatt since 2002 in July . It is the third largest mountain marathon in Switzerland after the Jungfrau Marathon and the Swiss Alpine Marathon .
General
The route starts in St. Niklaus at 1116 m above sea level. M. and leads first through the Mattertal via Randa and Täsch to Zermatt at 1616 m above sea level. M. , where the half marathon mark is reached and 600 meters in altitude have been mastered. After a loop through Zermatt, it is 600 meters steep uphill to the Sunnegga and then relatively flat on to the Riffelalp at 2222 m above sea level. M. , where you walk next to the Riffelalptram (Europe's highest tram line). From there, with a view of the Matterhorn , the last three kilometers parallel to the Gornergratbahn to the finish of the marathon on the Riffelberg at 2585 m above sea level. M. Overall, the goal in 1944 Altitude gain and 444 vertical meters downhill. The ultra marathon then continues on to the Gornergrat at 3,089 m above sea level. M.
history
At the first two events in 2002 and 2003, the run on the Gornergrat ended at 3,089 m above sea level. M. , whereby during the first event there was a snowdrift on the last part of the route towards the Gornergrat.
In 2007 the Mountain Marathon Cup took place for the first time , a running cup that consists of the Liechtenstein Marathon , the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon and the Jungfrau Marathon . The successor to the Mountain Marathon Cup was the 33M Cup . The 3 mountain marathons Liechtenstein Marathon, Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon and the Allgäu Panorama Marathon had to be mastered within 3 months .
For the 10th anniversary on July 9, 2011, the event was supplemented once by an ultramarathon , in which, in addition to the marathon route, another 3.4 km and 514 meters in altitude on the Gornergrat at 3,089 m above sea level. M. were run. The ultramarathon has been held annually since the 12th event.
At the 13th edition on July 5, 2014, a half marathon was also offered for the first time, starting in Zermatt. This now takes place every year.
As part of the 14th edition on July 4th, 2015, the 12th WMRA Mountain Running World Championships 2015 in the long distance took place.
On July 7, 2019, the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon hosted the 18th European Mountain Running Championships in collaboration with Swiss Athletics .

On May 12, 2005 the sponsoring association of the Zermatt Marathon was founded in St. Niklaus. Olivier Andenmatten from Grächen has been the new President of the Executive Board and OC since July 1, 2017. He has taken over from Stefan Truffer. Andrea Schneider has been the managing director since 2005.
